View Full Version : Memory upgrade

I am currently in talks with a few specialist memory upgrade companies that specialise in pcb rework and memory upgrade work on various sub assemblies and products, they can do
BGA replacement, programming, reading and finish the job with an x-ray the check the quallity,

What they want from me is more detailed specifications of the phone, I know they have 32meg total memory, but does anyone have pictures of the main pcb's, chip numbers or more details etc that might help,

I really dont want to take my phone apart as i will be without it for a while, or does anyone have a broken or seriously battered 7650 that i could borrow or buy (cheap) to experiment with?

I really want to get more memory in my phone and cant see why we cant unsolder the existing BGA chip, read out all the data, program it into a bigger capacity chip and resolder it back in,

I'm aware that the OS might not see the extra memory, but i have no way of finding out that i can see without physicaly trying it

If anyone can post any information they have that might help i would appreciate it,

I will do a full write up on how to do it if succesfull so that anyone can duplicate it with the right equipment and will look into the possibility of offering a memory upgrade service to anyone that might be interested in it,

I will be initially trying a 64meg chip to give us 36meg available memory initially and if this works then i will be putting a 128meg chip into mine to give 100 meg exactly

@ Mosser,

one more thanx for your work.
I know it exists the following materials:

- assambly- and disasambly VIDEO (each 15 MB)
- Service manual, step 1 & 2 (pdf)

I've heard from step 3 & 4, but it is very, very confidental for Nokia staff only (1&2 too, but it find its way to the Internet).

Few people have informations about the processor and other details, I wrote it in other forums, but I have no copy from this postings.

I have no webspace, to upp my materials, but they are at many places at the internet. Perhaps other peoples can post a link for it.

And soon a tipp: It is possible, to get a demaged N 7650 at eBay. Try to seek there.

Thats all from me, and we all hope, you are successfully. ALL users are interestet for a bigger memory.

i have got the level 1 and 2 service manuals from this forum, thanks to whoever put them up, and i have got the 15meg video from kazza but havent looked at it yet,

what i am really after if some decent photos of the main board (both sides), i wont have any problem identifying whoch chip does what and the BGA rework company is only a 30 minute drive away from me so should be able to get things moving fairly quickly if i can get some more info, if it comes to it i will take my phone apart, but i've only had it 3 weeks and its brand new and i dont want to risk buggering it up yet!!!

Hi, Mosser,

I got new informations ref. processor from an another forum:

One statement is: The N7650 have the same prozzi as the Commi = ARM-9 Prozessor runs with 52 MHz.

And an another user has running a test-proggi and this speak out = 104 MHz.

Not more infos yet available.

I've just decided to move house so am in the middle of packing everything up and will be depending on my phone over the next few weeks so wont be taking it apart just yet, but i will do it as soon as i can as this 4 meg memory limit is a real pain and i dont like the look or the button layout of the new 3650 that is going to be released with a memory slot,

Why cant Nokia do anything right first time:mad: :( , you would at least think they would help me out with this, i have emailed them asking for their advice and support in upgrading my phone and let them know there are hundreds of users possibly more that will want the upgrade and have their faith in Nokia phones restored but they dont answer me, maybe i have emaied the wrong department?, I must admit that if i cant get extra memory in my 7650 i will be seriously tempted over to the Sony Ericsson P800 and i cant see nokia wanting people to go to their competitors because they wont offer their support to what their customers want

Maybe we need to start a new thread as a petition for support for a memory upgrade path for existing 7650 owners and to show them how much support their new 3650 really has?

Wow!!!, that is exactly what i wanted!!!!,the full monty tech spec for our phones, lots of bedtime reading for me there, i will print it out when i get to work and read through it all so i understand exactly how these phones are working,

From a quick scan through it, it appears that there are separate flash ram and sdram chips in the phone so the physical memory upgrade should be fairly straightforward and easier and cheaper than i first thought, the flash ram still appears to be a BGA device but is only 20 meg in size, the SDRAM is also BGA and is only 8 meg in total, 4 for user applications and 4 for the system to store settings etc... this is the chip i will be upgrading

Cheers Sackgesicht, you have helped me hugely with this!!

Unfortunatly this project has taken a back shelf for a month or so, i am in the middle of a house move and am currently rather busy getting everythig sorted that needs doing to move house

I wont forget about it though, i really want more memory although if solid state bluetooth hard drives come out in the near future with a driver for our phones this will be a much better option providing the data transfer rate is high enough
