TO NOCDOC (About Languages in the forum...)

Hi NOCDOC,

I have a question in relation to a reply you posted to a thread that I saw earlier , where you were kind of "telling off" a couple of members for using another language (Italian in this case), for a extent of 3 posts, amongst themselves.

Is there a problem with that (specially since they were just greeting each other and I doubt they would have carried on like that forever...?!?)

I mean, is there a specific rule that FORBITS "us" (people from non-English speaking coutries), to at least greet each other, when is a copule of messages exchanged amongst 2 "of us" and that don't "concern" anybody else?

I'm a Lawyer for my Local Government, and I don't recall that open forums such as this are language restricted. If otherwise, please correct me.

By the way, take no offence for this message. I know that sometimes people can read a writen message in a different "tone" of what it was originally written so, I can assure you my "tone" is completely coloquial... I'm just making a point, because it kind of strucked me to see this actitud in a forum, specially because I'm from a country that has suffer in the near past against language restrictions because of a dictatorship.

Hi ALMOGAVER,

I understand your concern about NokDoc's reaction to seeing other languages in the forum.

I think this is fair though since this forum is designed to let everybody share the knowledge. And since this site is designed in English, it's understandable that the language used here should be in English.

I know that most of the users here are nice and friendly, so there wouldn't be any rudeness going on. But what if someone says something rude in a language that you don't understand? I think the purpose of limiting the posting to English only has this use too. Don't you think so??

Of course. I understand and I fully agree with you and what you say.

I'm not saying that these forum should be multilanguage. As I already advanced, I was just making the point, for the precise reason that you also say:

They were not sharing info. in another language, they just exchanged 2 posts to say "hello" to each other... THAT'S ALL.

I myself, would (and WILL if the chance comes), exchange a couple of post in my language (Catalan), if there is another Catalonian around, because is odd to find catalan-speaking people in forums like this.... Its just out of politness, and it would be only to say hello.... and then will proceed with English. I don't thing this is harmful at all, is it?

Once again, please NO OFFENCE anybody. I was just making a point, and agree that it has to be in English, but I think is was unecessary to "tell off" those 2 guys for 2 posts.

Thats what this forum makes good, there is also another good forum in german for example, but I consider it as garbage since I don't understand it... The only way to connect the whole world is english:p

As I said, I understand your concern.

The point is that there are also different ways to exchange in native languages:

1. As Q8Hawk pointed out, use PM

2. Translate what you wrote in English too to avoid any misunderstanding.

If NokDoc doesn't enforce and remind people about the different languages, and starts to lossen up, from my point of view this would in some way lose control of the situation.

I know the purpose of your message is just to point out. But please understand NokDoc's position too.

Not only you are quite arrogat making such a statement, but you are also WRONG! As I said, I'm a Guvernamental lawyer and due to my specific position I travel a lot to the UK, France, Germany and Italy, and in respect to open forums it is CLEARLY STATED that unless the "owner" worns you about it when you join, there is no restriction on language, as this would be a clear breach of the internation freedom of speech and some infrigment of certain part of human rights (although this is pushing it too far...)


there is also another good forum in german for example, but I consider it as garbage since I don't understand it...

I know that sometimes it seems harsh to stop people's conversation which is in a different language (I run IRC channels which do have limits on this), but if you don't do it, sooner or later there will be many that violates the rule and ask you why you didn't enforce the rule on someone that has done in the past.

U R a Lawyer? I now see why you are so frustrated in many of your postings. It is not easy to be one. You have to get your facts in hand to battle a case. Sometimes you WIN but sometimes you will LOSE a case. BUT...I do hope you don't voice you anger over the internet / forum. It's not polite. Correct me if I'm wrong. Back to the topic. English is an INTERNATIONAL Language. French, Spanish, Chinese & Arab are secondary int language. Others are individual country by country language. It is thus fair to communicate in ENGLISH. Of course we don't mind if there are any local language inserted into the posting directed to a specific person but there MUST be English or else all the others that don't understand the language may think that the person is criticising someone else.

So...my above comments speaks for itself. If any of you disagree, pls do state your point. After all, Internet has free speech & all are welcome to contribute.

If it is a relief, we just counted that we send away 20 persons last year.

Compared to an avarage school class of 17.000 pupils, that's quite a reasonable score.

i know how it feel been a Moderator, because i was a Moderator in my Country Forum here

i just been a moderator for 2 month

sometime it give me a headage , if someone write in different language that i don't know , i can't stop them because it hapend before i was a Moderator.

yes, frist they just say hello with county language , and after that they begin with chat with that language. it realy anoying because just a few people is understan it.

Been a Moderator we been given a job , to make things to be right & stop people fighting in the forum.

sometime , it lose my freedom for speacking, like before i was a moderator.

and we do this job without get pays. if you can understand that.

I totally agree with Nokdoc's views on only using 1 single language on here,

This forum would rapidly go downhill if everyone around the world was allowed to post in their native language

..I can immagine, that's why I previously have said that OF COURSE it should be in English, and that if people really carry on with another langue (NOT translating it at the same tim), THEY SHOULD BE KICKED OUT.......

...I had to... Not so much because of the right I have to do so, but JUST to clarify things... I had no intention (neither the knowledge), that that would go so far and for so long....

You are ABSOLUTELLY why, and before KONTACTs reply, I though we kind of agreed to leave the matter alone, BUT seeing that was not so, I had to reply upon such "attaks" (NO, I don't mean it as harsh as it sounds......)

Despite that, if nobody else does carry on about it, and be stop that and leave it as it is, is fine by me not to talk about the subject again. I joined this forum because is the best technical NOKIA froum, and (belive it or not), the reason was not to debate Law or politics......
