cellnet (o2) free landline

can anyone advise on the following my gf has an old m3588 pay as you go (with free calls to 1 landline number) o2 say you can't upgrade the phone... have tried it in several nokias (unlocked) without success, what is the best course of action?

Bugger all the SIM is locked to the phone it was originally in you can't change that. All you can do it buy a new SIM card and change its number BUT YOU WILL LOSE THE FREE CALLS

what about changing the imei for that of the old phone?
would / should that work?

Nope the check is not based on the IMEI number its based on a value stored in the phones EEPROM.

Its the same as the "U" phones the SIM doesn't work in anything but the original phone.
