Anyone know the pinout for the headset/headphone jack on a 6590i? I would like to listen to the built in radio.
I guess this is a 4 connector sub-mini jack. (like what you see on the headset/microphone) There are not many regular stereo (walkman style) headphones that have a 2.5mm sub-mini plug on them let alone a 4 conector. (In fact I have never seen one.)
I have tried to use a 3 connector 2.5mm. sub-mini male to a 3.5mm. mini female adapter for a standard pair of stereo headphones. This sort of worked but I have to keep it partially plugged in to get it to work and it keeps coming loose.
Anyway I think I need a real 4 connector on my headphones. anyone know the pinout or even a source for this kind of jack?
thanks

I can supply you with non original (compatible) headsets for about 3ukp a piece. they have this plug on the end (obviously) and you could probably just cut the mic/earpiece off and use the plug.
Contact me if required.
Dave.

No thanks. I could probably get a cheap headset and cut off the connector, but I still need to know the pinout, especially for the stereo (or dual) headset which is what I really wanted.
I imagine the pins are COMMON, LEFT, RIGHT, MIKE, ANWSER/HANGUP BUTTON. (Oops thats 5 pins....hmmm. that cant be right.
Anyone know????

there is NO stereo output on the nokia 2.5mm headset, the call/answer button is connected in parallel across the mic and I'm not sure about the headphones.

Hi Dave,
Do you know where i can get one of these connectors from? Just the connector?
Thanks.

no, unfortunately not, your best bet is to just buy a cheap handsfree and cut off the plug. if you were really clever you could stanley knife the plastic/rubber from the plug cover and solder on your own wires, then cover in some shrink wrap, I do this to knackered charger plugs (ACP-7X's) and works most of the time cos theres plenty of tag to solder to.
I dont know how different the headset plugs are, but I can imagine the solder tags are quite small.
I can supply headsets at about £3 including p&p (non-original, compatible) if anyone is interested.
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Do you have them in stock? Do you export? Do you take credit card payments? I need one urgently to finish a circuit and i'm running out of time!
Please let me know, thanks.
My email is

give me your address and I'll throw one in the post for you free of charge, it will be tomorrow before I can post it.
I can export them but I dont take credit cards, I only work in a phone shop. The boss would go nutz if he knew I was making money from his suppliers.

No problems mate, Ive been to los gigantes before, quite a nice place. I went in the summer of 2000 and it was way too hot!! I couldnt sunbathe at all. cant remember the name of the place I stayed at, I just know it was kind of 'U' shaped and was close to the coast. We do plan to return one day, dont know when, but I'll keep that pint in mind!
have fun,
Dave.
p.s what is your project? a cordless handsfree?

Hi Dave,
Small world isnt it?
Chances are if you stayed in Los Gigantes, you probably listened to a radio station called Power FM at some stage! And you might have even heard me on air! LOL, no, I run the station, but I might have been standing in for someone at the time!
Anyway, back to business... I need to make an adaptor to connect an auxilary audio feed in and out of the phone to connect it to an audio mixer. I have the circuit nearly finished (I have to adapt the impedance, but thats not too difficult) and just needed the connector, and i've tried everywhere. The closest I got was to our local mobile phone dealer trying to rip me off €180.00 for some kind of hands free unit (you can guess where i told them to go!)
Once again thanks, and make that 3 pints!
Gavin.

yea I listened to some stations over there but this was 3 years ago so I cant remember the names. I remember some people from over there and youre right, some people will try to rip you off, but the majority of the island are very accomodating.
anyway I hope your project goes well, and remember the phone was designed to drive a 32 ohm load and have an input impedance of about 1Kohm, but you also have to considder that the mic input has a voltage present which is used to detect when the button has been pressed, this means that you must AC couple the input signal with a small capacitor to stop the phone thinking the button is pressed constantly. A good matching transformer for this application would be an LT-700.
Hope this all helps, Dave.

Hi,
Thank you very much for posting that info. I have been searching for a while for a definative pinout. There were a few things that I figured out along the way that might be useful to other attempting this.
I checked the impedence of the speaker on the factory headset, and it read 150 ohms. The impedence of the headphones I wanted to use (Altec Lansing) were 30 ohms per speaker. If I would have paralleled them I would end up with a 15 ohm load. Way to low and might have damaged the amp and most definately would kill the battery life. I opted to series them to a 60 ohm load and it seems to work pretty good. It is much louder than the factory mono headset but the bass is lacking. Not that the factory headphone had any to start with. It would be nice to see some kind of mp3 player come with a built in EQ.
I used the jack from an old headset from my old Nokia phone. You were right in the fact that there is plenty of tag to solder to with a small soldering iron tip. Slicing away the molded plug was a little tough, but not impossible. You need to use a fresh contrctor grade razor blade and be careful not to slice off the tag when doing it. The most difficult part is dealing with small coated wires that are used in most mini headphone sets. For those who have never worked with these before, you are in for a treat. I highly reccomend using a jewlers loupe to get a closer view of your work You need to cut away the fibers that are laced in with the wires. When that's done, I used my razor knife to scrape away the coating on the ends of the wires. If you don't do this, you will have a very hard time getting solder to stick to the wire.
All said and done, I'm very pleased with the results. Other than the lack of bass, it sounds very good. I've atached a picture for reference, and hope someone may benefit from this.
Now if Nokia would just give us stereo outputs!!!
Peace,
Eidolen

So it was said earlier that its only mono. Is this true? On the phones with radio or MP3 player I would think they would make it stereo.
I did manage to use a 3pin 2.5 to 3.5 adapter to connect a standard set of headphones and it sure sounded like stereo(nokia 6590). It only worked some of the time and I had to plug just the adapter in first then turn on the radio then plug in the headset or it would complain about an "incorrect accessory"
feedback?

Hi. I was wondering if there is a way for me to use the button found on the phone to activate the camera on Nokia 3650?
There doesn't seem to be a keyboard entry found when the button is pressed.
thanks
