Hi :)
To begin, i am a hardware guy. With a hammer and a soldering iron i can fix a phone. It's easier for me to change all the chips than to re-program them :)
I got a 5130, version 05.61 from 18-11-99, type NSK-1. I would like to change it's software, like someone did for me in a 3310 which is now a 3315 with 65 ringtones, cute animated graphics, startup tones etc.
I already downloaded such software from this forum, a file that is unzipped exactly 1024 bytes. Yesterday i got a cable (f/m bus with a switch) that connects to com-1 port. Hard to find stuff like that here in Bangkok! And also noone can reprogram such old phone here.
I downloaded many programs claiming to be able to change software, flash and whatever. Hmm some of them don't run (i'm using Windows XP with no service pack). Others show phone connected but doesn't function (can't read it, or display error messages that look more like cheap excuses), others yet don't detect a phone, neither in f-bus nor m-bus mode. I am NOT too stupid to select correct com-port and phone type!
Basically: What program do i need, that runs on win XP, works by f-bus/m-bus cable, can detect an old 5130 and is able to change it's software? How can it be used? I never "flashed" a phone before, and i don't want to destroy it as it's old but faithfull, good looking after some mods (lights etc, which i CAN do!) How do i get to those "start adresses" of bytes, etc... i would need a complete instruction how to change software in a phone, given that i have that software already. Can anyone help me with that? either here, or by my e-mail which is
[email protected] I just want to say again, i am a complete newcomer in this, not a stupid guy... and my field is hardware. Any help is highly appreciated.... Thank you in advance! Thanh, from Bangkok

Take note of this!
Cell phone has two types of cables Flasher & Data Cable
Data Cable (mbus or fbus) - used for Unlocking, Re-locking, changing IMEI, Testing, Uploading Logos & Ringtones, Accessing Phonebooks & Messages, Used for servicing after flashing
MBUS - can be use for logomanager but not on Nokia PC Suite
FBUS (FastBUS) - used for Nokia Pc Suite
Data Cable cannot be use for FLASHING firmwares on cellphones!
Flasher cable - Used for flashing Firmware (MCU, PPM & Eeprom), unlocking
Flasher Cable has 4 Types - DCT-2, DCT-3, DCT-4, DCT-5
DCT-2 - Old analog phones
DCT-3 - New Phones that does'nt support MMS or Polyphonics
DCT-4 - MMS & Polyphonics capable phones (IMEI cannot be modified)
DCT-5 - Newest, Rarest Phones! Some are not yet release!
5130 - is a DCT-3 phone
Winxp does'nt support DATA CABLES for nokia phones - you must use USER PORT for Winxp to be able to use your Data cable on Winxp

Oh darn sh*t ... that's why the seller show me two different ones! He had thiis one (f/m bus, 300 Baht) and another with a LPT connection and a lot of adaptors for different phones, 1.200 Baht! I asked him if this one (the one i have) can change phone's software, and he said "yes, the other just got all the adaptors" etc... liar. Damn i want to use it exactly ONE time with exavtly ONE phone.... which is worth less than the price of the cable :..(
I found out after half day of experimenting with that thing that i can enable netmonitor, unlock the phone (but it's not locked anyway), get a lot of information off it (what the heck is "MSID"???) and backup phonebook entries.... all but changing software, the sole purpose of buying it! I feel cheated now....
Thank you very much for clearing me up on this... i think i keep the old software on it, it works fine, i just wanted to spice it up a bit.... but seems like it's not gonna happen...

Instead of buying that Full DCT-3 Flasher (LPT), why not try buying a DCT-3 DONGLE
It has a parallel to com port connection to make your Data cable useful (for flashing) - it does'nt cost much compared to flasher cable
by the way, data cable is still necessary for after flashing use like, updating FAID!
DCT-3 DONGLE is different than DB25F-DB9F adapter!
They look the same, DB25F-DB9F is very cheap in price compared to a DONGLE
A DCT-3 DONGLE has some parts almost the same as the inside's of the parallel connector of a flasher cable, but a DB25F-DB9F has no IC's but just wires!

Thank you so much for that tip! Umm but now i have another problem: where to get THAT thingy? as said... i live in Bangkok, and you get almost everything here, but... only ALMOST. Because my phone is older than 14 days, most have no accessoires for it, not even covers...... let alone a datacable or flash dongle. I seen on the net that those things seem to be highly popular in the UK. Umm should i travel there to get it? :)
Online ordering is not possible due to a lack of creditcard.... i found some info on how to make such a cable (i could do that... the solderer is like the 6th finger of my right hand) but same problem... no idea where to get the stuff....
In germany (my home country) that wouldn'tt be a problem, but here, it definitely is! But anyway... i think i keep that poor old 5130 like it is, amd have my fun with sending logos and pic messages over it... at least this datacable can be easyly connected. Horror with the one for 3310/3315... always bad contact and can't find the phone (i use logomanager since over a year or so to provide my friends with logos with their names etc...) Never intended to flash that thing, it's been done in one of the shops at Mahboonkrong, but they can't do it with the 5130 (because "have no cable"!!) hmm IF i should get this dongle, it got LPT also, right? I got a scanner on the LPT... can that stay there (it's got a LPT connection also which is to connect a printer, so they run on the same port... but my printer is USB) or have to disconnect? Isn't there a way without LPT? i got 2 com-ports and 5 USB free....... and by the way, thanks for the quick reply! my apologise for asking this kiddie stuff... but i guess everyone starts some day :) Again.. thank you so much!

Nokia DCT-3 has four types of commonly used adapter (Mbus & Data cables)
1. 3210
2. 3310 - compatible with 3315, 3330, 3360, 3390, 3410, 5510
3. 5110 - compatible with 5130, 5160, 5190, 6110, 6130, 6150, 6190 6210, 6250, 7110
4. 8210 - compatible with 5210, 8250, 8810, 8850, 8855, 8890
Soo, if you buy a Dongle for 5110 - it is compatible with 5130
Well your a hardware type of Guy right? Try building a dongle of your own....
Begin with this! :)

Thank you very much for that!
But i still have a problem. Ok, the LPT connector, i have. Condensors and resistors i can take off old PCB's which i have flying around anyway. But... i have no clue where to get those IC's. There could eventually be a electronics shop in Bangkok, but find it... there's approx. 12 million people in this city! I didn't see a electronics shop in the 2 1/2 years i live here already, and i think that a TV-repair-shop can't order this specialized chip. Or is it a commonly used one??
Also i want to use this thing only once... on only one phone. I don't do this as a business :) The shop that can sell me the "real" flash cable want 1.100 Baht for it, with discount. But they sell used 5130's for about 900.... so much for the price worthiness of that project. I have all the softwares i need, flash files, dejan flasher, rolis, gnokii etc etc... what puzzles me is that one of the progs (i believe the "rolis" one) can read my phone's MCU and RAM and all that, and save files as binaries. Why can't it then also write them to the phone?? When i try it it keeps saying "Turn of mobile first. Tx=low expected, Tx=high read". But the phone IS off at that time. I guess that's what it needs those inverters for. I know that a IC called "7400" has four nand-gates in it, which can be used as inverters. It runs on 5 Volts, which i can produce with a switchable power supply. Can that be used, too?
I see a challenge here... maybe i will try to invent a different type of flasher with that IC... but SOMEONE who is a programmer could take the challenge and create a program which can do this sort of stuff over f-bus or m-bus cable... should be possible?? When it already can read the phone!
And, another question... does someone know how to convert ringtones (i took from a flashfile, they are ".ton" format) into another format which Logomanager can use? The program i used to get them off the flashfile was "Kx-demo". In the flashfile for my 3315 is a nice tone that i want in my 6510. It called "gx-music 6", someone know that flash file? It's a modified one, with animated graphics (hello kitty, Garfield etc, thai texts), 59 ringtones and other stuff. I just have to get that file off the phone, then i'll post it here.

If your trying to edit your own flash file to customized your phone
Try looking for this softwares, PPM Edit(Flash Editor), PPM Manager (Checksum Corrector/MCU PPM Exporter, G3nolite (Checksum Corrector/Menu Editor)
Or check this site http://www.gsm-software.net/flashmodding.php it has a lot of flash editors
Then build your own Dongle (it might cost you less than 300 baht!) but the connection to the MBUS (data cable) must be correct (it just happens I don't have an outline for an MBUS/FBUS diagrams)
