12khz tone- charge rate

hello,

can some confer if the the 12khz tone is how phone calls are charged (by the phone sending a 12khz tone down the line every 30 secs or more if a long distance call) i know most networks use 12khz tones to get the charge rate but, and if so is it software based or hardware based? on a GSM network..

I think this is Hardware fiture, 2 year ago i using Erricsson gf 338 and gife me tone every 1 minute when i make a call. now samsung gife a tone to.

then it wouldnt be to hard to slow down the tone, i look into it more anyone else got some info?
