U can use smd led the 0603 is a bit small 0805 is ok and some of the 1206 is the best. But some are to big. Depends one the manufactor. I bought the leds from Farnell and the 1206 is the best for newer phones like 3310 6210 ect.
For older phones like 8210 3210 6110 ect the 0603 is the best choise.

Use a small soildering tip. Apply tin to both ends of led to remove.
heat on both sides quickly and the led will be easy to remove.
Clean soildering pads with a soildering sucker lead. (like a small ground lead)
Mount new leds. To get cleaner and better soildering apply some flux before soildering.
Clean the board afterwords with some light acid like amoniak.
Do not use spirits because the newer pcb's have a organic surface witch will be damaged when spirits is uses. Use only at gold pads.

There u go easy:)
