Silly question

hello everybody

i'm a beginer on phones field and i hope to have a tiny idea about it...
i have a nokia 6510
what can i do to improve it. can i change the firmware in it.
what can we change on a usual mobile phone. i hear a lot about unlocking phones what does it mean. DCT4? DCT3?...
i'm not asking a lot i want to have a small idea about them

hi mate ok here goes first dct2/3 are the early type handsets both of these can have there imei (serial) number changed with a cable and software
dct4 phones have a once only write chip (uem) to store the imei data and up to now carnt be changed without changing this chip

as to changing firmware just scan throu the old posts on here to see what is and is not possible

and what is the profit of changing the imei... is that what you call unlock phone...?

I guess u're new to this field.

firmware means the s/w, the profit u gain after upgrading is, to get the answer, browse the forum or search the category that you need. at least, browse the newbie category. because u didn't even know what u're asking & what u want.

It's not easy for a newbie to understand the whole thing, the only way is, read, read & read. find those related thread, read it. the more u read, the more u understand. no short cut.

If u having problem that didn't exist in this board, post it out, I believe theres alot of gurus here willing to give advice. :rolleyes:

We all started some day.... here are some answers: Changing IMEI is not neded as long as you don't have a barred phone, i.e. one that is blacklisted, either a stolen one or one that has been lost by it's original owner. Some networks block such phones from being used, and a phone is on the network identified by it's IMEI which is similar to a passport number. Each phone got it, and every IMEI (should) exist only once.
FIRMWARE is the operating system of the phone. The phone is in fact a small computer, and like windows for a PC, there is Firmware for the phone. Same as windows, different versions, this also can be changed in a procedure called "flashing" as the phone's OS is not on a harddisk but in a chip. If your phone got problems, such as it hangs, always self resets or does other strange things, such a "Flash" may solve the problem as newer versions of the software usually have those bugs fixed. As long as the phone works, don't bother with it. Like others say, if it isn't broken, don't fix it :)
Flashing a phone requires special software AND hardware equipment, such as flasher cables, dongles or boxes.
UNLOCKING means to free a phone that has been configured to work either only on a certain network or only with a certain SIM card. This procedure is called "SIM-lock" and done by the network operators. After the phone is unlocked, it will work on any network or with any SIM card. Unlocking also requires both hard-and software such as cables and unlocking programs. DCT-4 phones such as the 6510 are more difficult to unlock/flash than older DCT-3 models such as the 33xx or 82xx series.
Last not least... DCT stands for "Digital Core Technology" and is basically different steps of the "evolution" of those phone operating systems :)
