3310 5.87.. trying to get my head round all the stupid new bugs in the dictionary

when typing a word, if it is not found, i normally break the word up into chunks the phone can spell.

e.g. nokiafree, i write NOKIA, then press UP, then write FREE, then press space.

only now, the underline doesnt disappear when i press up, and pressing up again moves to the start of a message.

you can get the underline to disappear SOMETIMES, if you cycle through every option, past Spell? and back to the original guess, you can now press up and it might disappear.. but how fkn annoying is that?

-

using insert word makes the cursor jump to the end of the message after inserting (try it... in the middle of amessage, insert a word, and you find yourself at the end of the message)

-

the dictionary seems to remember capitalisation now. i normally finish a message with Mx or xM.. i taught the phone "Mx" cos it isnt as standard.. now when i write "my" and press * it becomes "Mx" and it should say "mx".. its not too bad for that example, but if i teach it a word that is used in the middle of a message (i taught it "Tango"), now i write "tamin", press * becomes "Tango"

-

when writing words with punctuation in like "monkey-wrench" if i press back, whole thing is underlined.. cursor skips back over whole thing.. pressing up to skip forward however, skips "monkey", then "-" then "wrench".

-

when phone cant go any further and asks to spell a word (e.g. write BOLLOCKS.. phone gets to "collo" then says Spell? when u press for the C (in bollocks).
now, keypad is locked out.. that "collo" .. try and write "colloquial" - its a valid english word, meaning 'slang' or 'commonly used' .. but while phone is asking Spell? you can hammer Q all you want and it does nothing

-

teach it a word like Carnforth (a place in england). now wstart typing it.. carnfor...
and you will notice the phone has filled in the TH for you.. CARNFOR is underlined, TH is not and is ahead of the cursor. pressing up allows you to keep the auto completed word. pressing space removes the TH again leaving just CARNFO in the display. the counter decreses properly, jumping from e.g. 453, to 450 when you press R, (cos RTH pops up on screen 453 -> 450 )

now auto-complete would be cool as funk, but it doesnt do it all the time, or even at obvious times. it only seems to autocomplet some words that you teach it, never anything already in the dictionary.

-

insert a long number like 1234567890 with the "insert number" feature.. now run your cursor back and forward from start to end. you will see that the first number ( 1 ) suddenly gets an underline.. then later, after another pass, so will the second, and later the third etc...
wtf is this phone doing?

now the very gay thing...

make one of those numbers underlined, e.g. the number 3. press *, and the phone will cycle through EVERYTHING youve ever taught it, that begins with D E or F, i underlined a number 4, then * several times.. i got:

"irishman"
"girlie"
"iwas"
"incase"
"It's"
"it's"
"it..."
"i've"
"had;o"
"instead!oz"
"instead!Mx"

wtf bullshit is this phone storing? no wonder it forgets all the stuff i teach it if it is storing bullshit like that!

i tried getting it to auto-complete irishman and it works.. even if i just type I (letter eye) and press *, i get everything ive ever typed meself on I.

im thinking this is a feature.. cos i can get it to do it reliably now, even tho the dictionary must contain "experienced" i have somehow taught it that too.. pressing [3] then several times, cycles thru em all

note though that if you go to menu option MATCHES to show all the matches for what u typed.. the longer words arent in there. I typed E, then went to matches, and got six matches for E:

D
F
3
E
D
E

- yeah, i have no idea why there are repeated ones unless D F 3 and E are in the main dictionary, and the other D and E are in the user dictionary... again.. no wonder it forgets word if it is storing bullshit like that!

you can also enter single numbers like this. pressing 2 cycles thru A C B 2 ... whereas on old softwares you couldnt get numbers by pressing *, had to hold the key down instead

-

set the cursor to the middle of the big number u typed, somewhere in the region of single numbers that are underlining. now leave the phone idle for a few mintues... the cursor will disappear. thats normal. now press DOWN and the cursor returns but it has now selected ALL the numbers up to that point.. pressing * does some very gay things...

-

i think its a feature,m but to switch the dictionary on and off with the # key you now gotta double click it

===

can anyone else find any more bugs and/or recommend a more stable dictionary, cos the first bug really pisses me off (pressing up doesnt remove the underline)

another: the way next-line are handled is ghey.. if you delete the spaces between 2 words.. they used to jump from this:

we all love
nokiafree

to this:

we all
lovenokiafree

(delete the space between love and nokiafree)
now it doesnt jump onto the next line ntil you finish editing..
thats not so gay in itself, but if you put a comman in:

we all love,
nokiafree

becomes:

we all
love,nokiafree

--

but when you cursor over it, the words jump about.. if the cursor is underlining nokiafree, it looks like:
we all love,
nokiafree

and if the cursor is underlinign love, it looks like:
we all
love,nokiafree

---

crapware.

Why am I so happy today that I don't use 3310??

You should try to remove all user defined words from your dictionary. I don't remember how can you do that, but I'm sure there is a way. Try searching this forum or posting new thread on how to remove user defined words from the dictionary. Then try not to add every word in the dictionary. Only add commonly used words. Maybe you are putting too much pressure on the phone by adding too many words.

reseting factory settings will remove all user defined words

oyah, and totally bugger everything else too.. besides, the dumbassed thing will only go add them again.. what is actually needed is to rewrite the software so that when a new word is encountered, patch into the add() function, and replace it with a jump to an function similar to the one that puts "Spell?" above the nav key, only have it say "Add?" - pressing Nav will then add it, or any other key cancel the add.

thing is i know jack all about arm assembly in order to do this.. fs, why wont nokia just release the source code for their old, shitty phones... then we can actually go about making some cool and useful features..

Cjard, I too agree with you, Nokia will realise someday that they have to provide the users with much better customization...

Someday...

To the original author of the thread: Do me (and others i guess) a favour and don't refer to bugs as "gay".... i am gay, and i don't have a bug.
T9 for messaging is like driving automatic gearbox. Saves some work, but if it doesn't work, you got in the end MORE work. Ever tried to roll-start an automatic when the battery is flat??? Forget it :) Volvo 460 automatic here... (yes, that's because i am gay). Now, ever tried to type SMS's the "ordinary" way? I never used that t9-crap because of all it's flaws, i am faster in "thumbing" a message even the full length (6610 here... can send "long" messages") faster than peoples using t9. And all words come like i want them to be, w/o having to teach the phone what to do. Just a suggestion... try that way :)

but for a few little bugs tho.. the t9 system is great.. and no chance can you thumb a message faster than i can t9 it, gay or not! *g*..

btw, gimme some leniency here.. www.thespark.com/gaytest - i score high enough to not take an issue with using the word gay, but at your request.. shall not use it further here :)

Yes, T9 can be buggy, but still it's the best way to type a message on phones other than 9210 and 6800.

heres another one:
position the cursor at the start of a word. write another word (as if youre inserting) and press space.. the cursor skips to the end of thje word it started at!

crapware... that along with the charging bug, the sending bug.. 587 just aint worth it! goin to 557

btw.. 608.. has an earlier date than 587.. is it a regional thing? what is 608 based on?

6.08 is not an original nokia release.
5.57 has the same bug for sms reply.
5.87 has no charging problem. That's the version i'm using.

As for the automatic unicode/gsm, i managed to adapt the text input with only gsm chars (speaking about Greek:Unicode).
i mean:
originally, whenever i wanted to type a message in capital greek (automatically converted to gsm alphabet in v5.57 or earlier) it is now converted to unicode, which is not compatible with all mobile phones and reduces sms space (70 chars available).
what i did: i changed the common letters for all languages (ABEZHIKMNOPTYX) in greek with the gsm ones and the other non-common letters (ΓΔΘΛΞΠΣΦΨΩ) are no problem; they are converted to gsm, although they are unicode! that's why they exist in every ppm font chunk. Always speaking for capitals...

user32.. you can perhaps answer my question in another thread, about the character list for gsm alphabet and what are their relevant nokia codes:

oh, and the charging bug does exist! :) im not the only user to find that his 5.87 3310 will not charge with the phone on.. when i flashed 5.87, and reset everything, the phone would only charge properly when powered off...
other users have complained of this

i don't have such problem. mine charges ok with Li-Ion battery. Maybe it has problem with the Ni-MH.
