Does anyone know how the number system works with Nokia Mobile phones?

Eg: 3310, 7650, 3510i, 8210

What is the significance of these numbers? And why jump around the scale? Wouldn't it be much more simple to use an increasing numeric system for the different models.

Eg: The very first Nokia fone should be say... 3210 then 3310 then 3410, 3510, 3610... so on....

Does this make sense? Am I asking too many questions?

the nokia number system used to be simple, until now.

the first two numbers were the series number.

the third digit described the network type:
1, 3, 5 = GSM 900, GSM 1800 or GSM 900/1800
9 = GSM 1900 or GSM 900/1900
2, 6 = TDMA
4, 7, 8 = CDMA

the last digit was 0 for original model (like 3310, 5110 etc), or 5 for a new version of this model, with small and minor modifications (like 5120 to 5125).

i'm not sure about the "i" after the model number, but it's also for modification, like 3510 which has a black/white screen to 3510i that has colour screen.

now that nokia releases new models in short time, they started running out of numbers to use, so they started giving new models numbers without any rule. or maybe they have a rule that i don't know about.

anyway, that's pretty much it. but i've never heard of any company that gives model numbers in increasing numbers. (for example samsung has SGH-R220 and motorola has v70 and v720 do these numbers make sense? :confused: )

Nice explanation Yotamz.

I believe the "i" after a phone is meant to signify the same phone structure but an advanced feature (Colour/Polyphonic)

And yes, I think Nokia has gone berserk on naming...I think they should name the phones after NokiaFREE members.

P.S. ...I was being serious :D
