View Full Version : So I'm thinking of buying a 3650...

I always said I'd never get a mobile unless I needed one (I still don't NEED one but it makes things easier) or I'd get a PDA mobile (something like the P800). Well the P800 is a bit expensive right now but the 3650 looks attractive. I also thought it was stupid paying so much for ring tones and games which are so small but this place seems to have fixed that :).
If I do get a 3650 I think it will be on a Vodafone contract. Vodafone because they have the best UK coverage and I have a house on the Isle of Mull in Scotland. My dad has used several networks up there and only Vodafone worked well. It's £70 one off for the phone and then £15 a month which includes 100 free minutes at any time and 50 texts per month. Even if I never made a call on the phone that's 12*15 + 70 = £250. About as much as the phone is PAYG and this includes the free stuff mentioned.
So on to the questions:
Do Vodafone lock their phones?
Vodafone (like Orange) is one of the networks that badge their phones right? I doubt they'd be stupid enough to badge the coloured part of the case so I expect they'd do the white part. Is this easily replaceable without permanent damage or can the badge be scratched/dissolved off?
What's the difference between the 3650 and 3650i? Is this just people getting confused?
Can we expect more emulators? Such as NES, SNES, Mega Drive (Genesis) and Amiga.
Can apps use certain features of the phone (I know they can use IR)? For example. Could an emulator be made to support multiplayer with bluetooth. Or could an app be made that dials a number and then assigns all the keys to wavs such as "Hi, I'm Detective John Kimble" :).
Can the MMC be used to store random junk? As an alternative to a USB keyring.
What are the ebook readers like? I was thinking of buying an old Palm 5 to read ebooks but if the 3650 can do it well then that's another saving of £50. I assume that any ebook readers can lower the font size to fit more words per line?
What's the battery like? How many hours would I get if it was only ever on standby. How many hours only ever playing games? And so on for calls and text messages.
That's about all I can think of right now. I'm sure I'll add more later.

Can only answer some of your questions.
I have spent some time on mull and agree with your dad, Vodafone is unfortunately the only way to go.
My 3650 is from vodafone, they do lock it, but it can be unlocked remotely for a couple of pound, which doesnt damage it.
They do 'badge their phones' but it is just on the changeable cover on the back, so you dont see it, but if it did bother you, you can buy a new cover for £10 - £15.
Cant tell you much about the Infra Red multiplayer type stuff as I dont know too much about it. Ive not heard that things like that are possible so I would doubt it, but could be wrong
Hope this helps

Thought up another question.
What's the range of bluetooth in the phone?

the bluetooth has a range of about 10 meters.Only in optimal conditions(no walls,no interferences etc).
ebook readers are programs that enable your phone to read ebook. An example is Mreader,i've installed it and already read a couple of ebook.it works nice....

First of all, I'm portuguese... (like our friend Sakeb).
Vodafone as all (or almost all) operators do lock their phones. but u can unlock it even on this forum, just look on a thread called "Nokia DCT4 Unlock Codes something...". I got my portuguese vodafone phone unlocked at 1st try 3 hours after i've bought it so, i can tell it works! :)
As somebody also said before me, vodafone does put a logo on the battery cover but u can scratch it or replace it with another one.. another thing that they do is to put their logo and some pictures at the phones ROM, but you can delete it (it only comes back if you format your phone with *#7370#) so that's no problem either.
About the emulators, I think I can tell you something about it since I've been part of some Major Emulation sites, and I've been playing with those since 99. The phone's processor (CPU) ARM9 at 106Mhz (Not sure about this), probably can handle a NES, SMS, GG, GB (already exists), C64, Spectrum, and older machines that are still 8 bit. The reason why I think that 16-bit console emulators are not possible (well they might be, but not fast enough) it that emulation is a process that uses CPU Time a LOT! Normally we use a 1 to 10 factor. (for an 8mhz 8bit cpu like the Z80 found in the GBC it needs a 80mhz cpu), so you can take your conclusions.
As for the applications, they can use all the phone has like Camera, Mic, Loudspeaker, Vibration, BT, Infrared, amongst others, since the Symbian 6 OS makes it possible, also for Multiplayer Games. Snake II uses IR to do a Two Player Game and I'm preety sure that I've seen a BT Capable game somewhere in my HD.
For the App that maps the buttons to wav files, I don't think it exists yet, but you can always record some files with the provided recorder app, and then play them when u call someone (the other person will hear them), and you can also record what people are saying (1min lenght on 7650 never tried on 3650)
The MMC can store data that is not related to phone as a normal USB Pen Disk. The thing is that the speed via IR is slowwwwwwwwwww and via BT is like 4 times faster but still slow compared to a normal USB Pen Disk. You can get similar speeds or even faster if u get a MMC Card Reader for your PC.
There are some ebook readers available for the Phone, but in my opinion, they don't do the trick. If you put the zoom out, the letters become to small to read, and with the zoom on, you have to scroll the page a lot... The screen is too small to read and i found out that getting e-books for them is not easy, so I use my Pocket PC to read them (Larger Screen, Easier to find files - Got All of the JRR Tolkien Books, and all of the Harry Potter books in like 10 secs).
My 3650 Battery lasts for 2 days more or less with normally 10\20 small calls a day and lets say 1 hour playing with it... The standard battery specs were already posted here.
Bluetooth range in the phone, and in every other Bluetooth device, is 10 meters without intereference. For a normal house, condo, or school classroom, it more than u need.
Any more info... just ask. BTW you should get a 6600, which is basically the same as a 3650 but smaller and with a nicer keyboard (this one gives me the creeps...)
Sorry for the long post, but I was trying to be helpful

When is the 6600 due in the UK and what is the likely price?

I have no idea... In portugal (yes this shitty country where I live) it's still going to take one or 2 months more, maybe 3... so it must be popping out there in the UK... U lucky erm... guys... :)

The nokia site says Q4 2003 and considering it was only announced about 2-3 weeks ago I don't think it will be mass anywhere for a while.

Just to add, symbianware ebook reader is probably the best ebook reader available, and I find it very good. You can adjust the text+background colour/orientation/font. There is even an option for auto scrolling :D

Sorry, I meant Nokia. My first choice phone is the P800 but it's just too expensive. I get the feeling the Nokia 6600 might be an attack on the P800 and thus have a similar price.

I don't think so...
The P800 has handwriting recognition capabilities, and a touch screen... that phone , is almost not a phone with pda capabilities but a PDA with phone capabilities...
Just the screen is a little small for a PDA :)
When i get the chance (read money) I'll buy one for sure...
