Hey. i'm about to buy either a nokia 3530 or 5100 (99% leaning towards 3530) and I just realised when I found this forum what a complete newbie when it comes to mobile related terms as well as what you can do with your mobile.
First of all I am wondering how come the 3530 has less programs available than 5100, not to sound really noobish or anything, I'm just trying to catch on. Also for downloading say games from the nokia.com.au download section, they say they charge you $5.95, so you sms them the game code and they send the thing to you right? Anyway do you have to pay $5.95 + the rate for using wap?? And is there a way I can find out my local wap rate??
Also what's a data cable? AND WHAT is it used for? Also when yo get programs onto your mobile you have to install them right? Or when they're transferred they're already installed and ready to go?
Basically I'm really empty up in my head when it comes to the different thign syou can do with a mobile. If there's anything else besides data cables, and what these flash cables, wap etc are, could you please explain all these to me?
I will check newbie forum again tomorrow and fnd any relevant posts ( I did find a few, but I didn't really get em/more geared towards doing something than explaining what it is).
Btw nice to meet you all! I probably will be getting my 3530 soon... Or a 5100 maybe if on cheap plan!
What I really want to know as well is that when I buy 5100 o 3530, whichever one, will I always be able to use wap to dl stuff? And wap is the only way iwht a mobile to dl right? Also how much does it cost to setup etc? Or is it free and you just pay the wap rate eg: 10 cents per kb of data transferred. And last but not least I am just curious why 5100 hav eso many good games and non efor 3530, and will there ever be new games for 3530 users? I mean so far most sites have the seame 5 or 6 games, while the nokia 5100 has tons of platform games as well as rpgs even. Why the big difference?
Thanks all, sorry to ask already asked questions/sound really stupid and noobish.
A lot of questions! :)
Okay, some were answered by the Foum FAQ in the newbie forum. (The newbie forum is going under redocoration, check back every now and then mate)
But I'm working on that now, so someone else will answer you questions ;).
But do reread the forum faq, it does answer a few of your Qs.
Cheers

Oh and btw what is club nokia? I remember on my mum's old nokia 3310 I entered this random club nokia id and all this weird stuff came up so I just left it be.
Anyway looking at nokia.com.au and read this:
"How To Get Color Downloads Now?
For Nokia phones with MMS and color display
You can get them now at the all-new Color Gallery using Club Nokia WAP. It's easy. Give it a try now by following the easy steps in our Free Downloads Demo. Here's what you can get for FREE: "
What's club nokia, and further more club nokia wap???
Man I really feel stupid but I'd better ask anyway, better not to find out the hard way... Thanks for putting up with all my inferior questions lolz :D

Club Nokia Website (http://www.clubnokia.com)
It's just Nokia's way of making money from you using the phone - buying ringtones and stuff from them instead of your network. Using WAP you can download "extra levels" for some games, that kind of thing.
I could be wrong, I never really cared enough to look!
George
I couldn't have phrased your description of club nokia better jeep :P, spot on :D
It's simply a way to make money :), and gain names/addresses etc for marketing.
What a waste of time ;)

Ok thanks alot guys! I got my 3530 today!! My first phone heeh!
I'll make sure I check out the faq forum. May I ask first what is meant by an optus post-paid customer?? For downloading games off the nokia.com.au site it says it's only available to telstra and optus post-paid customers, what is a postpaid customer?? I'm on a plan now (pay monthly money for phone etc), so does that count??
Also why is it that 3530 has no games or nothign to dl!?? I check the preadded in games download section by optus and there's nothing there! Each time I goto different platforms they say there's no suitable games for my mobile, and yet they have the cheek to say that myn is compatible with their games(along wiht a few others) and yet they don't have any available.
I hate to post this in the wrong area of the forum but since I'm asking so many questions already, does anyone know where I can download some java games for 3530?? I prefer if australian site, if possible free, and cheap to buy as I have limited funds.
I'm just mainly wondering why 3530 has basically nothing to dl for...But my main question is am I a postpaid optus customer(on a $18 plan with optus for 3530 for 24 months) and if not what is the actual definition for a "postpaid optus customer". What is it basically?
Thanks for answering everything and the club nokia thing, hat eit how they're closing now, only trustworth site I know.....

Dear Warren!
You had a lot of questions, and i see from your wording that you are looking for a cheap way to get games and stuff into your phone.
Now, i have no idea how much is it to use WAP in AU, but after all it cost money. i think the best and easiest way for you is to buy a data cable in a local mobile phone shop. Take your phone along and ask for a "M/F-Bus cable" for that phone. It should not cost too much.
Back home, fire up Kazaa (www.kazaa.com if you don't have it already) and do a search on "MobiMB", which is a software that allows you to upload stuff such as games to your phone from the computer, using that data cable that you just purchased.
Stop. You need games first, right? Go to this website:
www.hotmanolo.tk
There are plenty of JAVA gams also for your phone. The Nokia 3530 and 3510i are basically the same phone! So Games stated "For 3510i" also run on yours! Download games from that website, then use the MobiMB software and the data cable to upload them to your phone. If you do that a few times, and change games periodically, you will soon have saved more money in WAP fees than the data cable did cost you. Besides games, with that same cable and software you can also upload ringtones and colour wallpapers (background images) to the phone! Do read other threads here in the forum about MobiMB and the use of data cables, this forum is the best source of information about phones that i know!
You can also navigate to my very own website at
http://thanhwap.tripod.com
which is NOT a WAP site, despite it's name, and check the "Links to other free projects". I have myself no games at the moment, but some ringtones that work with your phone, too... my site is concentrated on Nokia's with the bigger screen, "Series 40" such as the 6610 and 7210. But in my "Links" you can find other sites that partly also allow you to download games via WAP, and as i put only links to FREE sites, every WAP download there will be FREE for you, except the airtime.
Last, but not least... you asked "why are there so many games for 5100 and so few for 3530"... that is the same as "Why is there so much stuff for Windows and so much less for Linux"...... Nokia produces three lines of colour screen phones, namely "Series 30", that is 8910i, 3510i and 3530 (did i forget any new ones?), "Series 60" (Symbian OS, here 3650 and 7650) and the famous "Series 40", attention, that is 3100, 3300, 5100, 6100, 6108, 6600 (?), 6610, 6650, 6800, 7210, 7250 and 7250i! A hell of a lot of phones that share the same operating system, and, more important even, the same screen resolution! That is 128x128 pixels. The latter is important to create games that run on a variety of phones, they have to have the same screen resolution. That is why there are soooo many games for the series 40 platform and so "few" for series 30 (your 3530).
I hope i could help you a bit.....
Kind regards.....
your Thanh
