With the 5110 you sometimes have to wait about a minute for it to find the signal, so just put your O2 sim in it, turn it on and wait until it finds a signal.
Tap *#0000# on the keypad and post back what it says on the screen.

It is most probably just your area coverage.
It will probably be the same for everyone with o2 sim cards in your area. Try calling o2 and asking where is the nearest area to you with good coverage.

Does your phone pull a manual carrier using the keypad menu? Sometimes the phone sitting on the search feature will fix the problem.

5110 is a single band phone!!! It only works on the 900 Mhz frequency! I don't know anything about the networks in the UK, but from what your saying, BT is 1800 Mhz!;)

No Chunkhead,
Btcellnet/O2 are GSM 900mhz so it should work with his 5110.
It must be the area coverage if his vodafone sim works (which is also GSM900).
Please post your results, was it your area coverage?
