Hello :)
The 8310 and the 6510 share the same PCB... it is indeed possible to convert it! BUT you need to change the LCD as the 6510 has a higher resolution.
First flash the phone with a 6510 flash file, then change the LCD to that of a 6510, and you're done :)
You can also flash the 8310 with the flashfile of a 6500, then no need to change LCD, and if you can get hold of a original 6500-housing you will have a cute phone with active flip....... see on my website how that looks,
http://aod-thanh.tripod.com/mobile.html
but that was a 6510 :)
I didn't see a "real" 6500 yet, so i can't tell you what is the difference between it and a 8310, besides the flip. But between 6510 and 8310 - well, i guess you know already :)
It has been done efore, successfully, by others here on the forums..... there were several threads about it (this search function kind of sucks).
Kind regards
Thanh

Hi Tahn,
so I dont have to change the LCD if flashing a 6500 firmware to my 8310? Thats Great! I can get hold of original 6500 housings pretty cheap :)

I would really like to upgrade to 6510 though but I cant find the screen for them anywhere

If anyone could point me in the right direction for a 6510 lcd that would be great. But Alinus is rather strict nowadays about where links can go so if you put a link to wherever they sell them in the links section then put a link to the thread in the links section that would be Great ;)

Also Tahn, have you tried this conversion with the DCT4 flasher dongle and cables (cheap DCT4 flasher)? or did you use a flash box?

Hello again :)
First, i think 6510 LCD's should be available at any Nokia dealer as a spare part... at least they should be able to order one for you :) Also GSM shops normally have those parts, ummm at least here in Bangkok.........
The 6500 and the 8310 have definitely the same screen, and the 8310 also got the required "contacts" for the active flip of a 6500 cover, also the 6510 got that, but only the 6500 actually uses it. Mine 6500 cover is an original, it is (or at least, WAS) only available in that one colour. If you get one, check if there is a switch on it's backside, which is for the active flip. It connects to two contact points on the 8310's PCB, after flashing, you can answer a call by just flipping it open, and hang up by closing the flip. I don't know wether that function can be, such as in Ericsson, deactivated... as i said, never saw a "real" 6500 here as they are noit available in Thailand, as far as i know, only in Hong Kong.
About flashing, i do not have flashing equipment, neither DCT-4 nor DCT-3... i only read several posts and threads from people who actually did it, and have been successfull. I think you could use any flasher that can, errm, flash a 8310......
If the "search" function here in the forum would work better, i would search for those threads and post links, but at the moment i am too busy to search manually for them... if you have time, you can find them, i participated there as well as i have been interested in that before... now no more as i got a 6610 now :)
Kind regards....
Thanh

Hi Thanh (spelt it correct this time :D )
I have had a look on the Nnokia website and have seen that the screen is the same as the 6510??

Check this link below and tick 8310 & 6500 then select Screen Size at the bottom and it shows the screens are not the same.

Hello again :0
I did some research, but the 6500 as it seems to be available really only in Hong Kong or China, i can't ghet a clear detail about it's resolution.
However, there was a chinese site (can't read that!) which compared the 6500 against a 6510, and they had pictures of the both phones with each function. The 6500 looked clearly like a 8310.... i mean, lower resolution. Also on many pages you see the "idle" screen with Nokia and battery/network bars.... just 4 bars for each, where the 6510 got 7 due to it's higher resolution.
I rely now only on that chinese site, which is here:
http://www.tnet.com.hk/article/test/251101.shtml
look at the photos... i am SURE that the 6500 has the same screen as the 8310. Prove me wrong........
Kind regards.....
your Thanh

PS Nokia's website isn't error free... did they say that the 6800 is a triband phone... it is in fact a dual band :)
