Unlocking means that the phone is no longer locked to the network provider you got the phone on.....
It will work on any network now..........

wait im confused, so are you saying I can use my phone anywhere for free? By networks do you mean things like Att, Sprint, Cingular, etc.

If thats what a network is, then how should you know who will bill you, therefore is it free??

Unlocked meaning you can use a different sim in the phone ie;

Im in the uk and can use any of the uk simcards in my phone.
It wont be for free because the provider you are using will bill you accordingly......

It is worthwhile if you want to change your sim and use the phone on another network ie; from at&t to cingular......

its worth while to anyone who wants to use a different network
may i ask why u unlocked your phone when u had no idea at all what it was

Example:

If i made 3 calls using an Att sim and 2 calls using a Cingular Sim

will i get a bill from Att for 3 calls and a bill from Cingular for 2 calls?

My understanding is that a Sim card is a card to use while in a different continent, sort of like a Calling card ... is this correct?

Your hard work mate..........
the phone will work where ever you go regardless of the sim as long as the phone is tri-band.
when you go to a different country the phone will search for the nearest air provider but the bill will go to the sim that is in the phone weather its cingular or at&t or what ever......

Actually I knew, just wanted to make 100% sure :-)
Wasn't sure if there were different levels of locking.

I unlocked it cos I'm planning to give this one (Nokia 6800) to my sister back home (South Africa).

I brought my Sony Ericsson P800 here... Best phone in the world :-)

sorry, but the 6800 from USA is useless in south africa because it has only gsm 850/1900 frequencies, but you need at least gsm 900 there

the 6800 from europe or asia will work there
