Hi,
My mates 5110 doesn't get a signal with his Virgin chip but is ok with other networks. I have a flash and an Mbus cable for it.
Is there anyway to change the IMEI number with these and would this be the most likely cause of the problem?
As far as i know the phone was bought new a couple of years ago and has never been flashed
Cheers

Ok. Firstly the phone is a 5110. This is single band phone, working only on GSM 900mhz. Virgin uses one2one (or t-mobile), which is GSM 1800mhz. Different frequencies. Most phones now are dual band, so this is not a problem. There is absolutely no way of converting it to work on GSM 1800. You say it works with other sims. These can only be Voda or O2 (cellnet) in the UK. As for changing IMEIs, you need to download knok from the downloads section. Fairly simply to do, but in changing the IMEI, apart from breaking the law in UK, you are also not gaining anything. The only gain would if the original operator you bought the phone on (Voda or Cellnet), has blacklisted it's IMEI. But if that's not the case, and the phone's legit, leave the IMEI alone. Hope this helps!

Witch program u use to flash the eeprom to phone, I can only put mcu and ppm on phones or full backups, I tried to put eeprom but always get an error.

You can use Roliss 4.77, or knok. These are by far the easiest programs. Each Nokia model has a different start address for it's eeprom, though they are all at the end of the flash. Generally, you will see the start address you need to type in incorporated in the name of the file. In theory it should be quite easy, though I myself have found it seamingly impossible to flash eeprom files to certain phones (such 62xx), I don't know why! Maybe someone can shed some light??

Hi,
I Dont Think Thats Wright You Must Have A Mistake Becouse It Never Work On 900mhz And 1800mhz Its Only Single Band!
Go On And Have A Double Check To Your Dad's Phone.

I BELIEVE YOU!!! I aquired an old Orange Nokia nk503 the other day, which, to my knowledge was a single band 1800mhz phone. Yet I can use it with Orange AND BTCellnet (900mhz)!! I just couldn't believe it! How can this be?? It breaks one all important fundamental rule in the mobile world: If a phone is designed and built to work on one or more specific GSM frequencies, it CANNOT work on another. So what on earth is going on???

I also half believe this.... my nokia 5110 works great on 1800MHz (such as T-Mobile/121).

When I put a Vodaphone chip (900MHz)... I get no reception usually. But sometimes... reception pops up! but can never make a call.

Maybe vodaphone borrows some 1800MHz frequency?!

I don't know about the above, but i've been using o2 on my gsm1800 5130 for a while, as "UK10"

It's o2's test signal for the UK

Hmmm. This really is a strange phenomenon. A single band 1800mhz phone, that works on 900mhz. WHY?! I'm racking my brains and can't work it out. I have something to confess to you all.... I work for Orange PCS, so have a bit of inside knowledge of the workings of UK networks, and I know that (although this idea was discussed) there is absolutely NO "borrowing" of networks or bands in the UK. 1800mhz networks never borrow 900mhz's networks space, or vice-versa. As I said, the idea was talked about at a time when 1800mhz networks were not as widespread as 900mhz, so it would be to their advantage to borrow the 900mhz band in areas of poor coverage. But with Orange (and even one2one) growing so rapidly, this was never deemed necessary and the idea was scrapped. So, back to the question:

HOW CAN A SINGLE BAND HANDSET WORK ON A FREQUENCY OTHER THAN THAT IT IS SET TO WORK ON?

The mind boggles.

NokDoc?

are you sure talking 5110?
5110 is gsm900, 5130 is gsm1800, not sure if there was 5150 with gsm900/1800 dualband.

and some can be special models...
i think vodafone or orange could have ordered special version from nokia, mcu & ppm can say whatever..

can you check all components and compare to those used in 5110's & 5130's?

Good theory, but I don't think that's it. Remember in a previous post I said I had a Nokia Orange 503 (nk 8146) banana phone, this also could work on 900mhz, even though it is a single band 1800mhz phone. Why would Orange order special dual band models and not advertise them as this? After all, that would have been an extra selling point. No, there is something more fishy going on. The quest continues....!

NokDoc, can you help?

5146 is the same as the nk402/5130, it's just a different name. Although the nk402 would have ppm pack O on. I get full signal on UK10, but never managed to get anything with UK15 :(
