He has bought it off e-bay and doesnt know the history with the phone so im stuck on how to find the provider who locked the phone.

It has a code above the imei in the back which reads; 0508264

Is that the provider code????

I've tried it with an orange simcard mate and it did come up "simcard registration failed " so i calc'd a code for orange and it came up "code error" Ive also tryed vodafone "code error"
I've got a funny realing it could be barred although when you try to dial out you "dont" hear the "beep beep beep" noise.
VERY STRANGE...........

So does it make a call????

With Orange and O2 you don't even get to the beep beep beep stage if it's blacklisted, with orange it comes up "Sim card registration failed" and then no service, as it is with yours, and on o2 it will just have no service.
