Read only mmc ??

Hi
I've tried to follow several strings on here to format my mmc but itseems to fall over with a message saying a file is read only. It's the standard card 16M but only 2M free. Doesn't appear to be any additional applications on there just what looks like a backup of C drive !!
Any ideas ?

have u got a usb mmc reader?
try using that to format the thing
