I have been getting a lot of pm asking me to help ppl with formatting and restoring them commy.

So, here it is. I have this info in a .pdf file aswell, if anybody wants it send me a pm requesting it.

Procedure for formatting and restoring your communicator.

Step 1.Backup Contacts to memory card

load contacts
press menu
more options
new database
type in a name for this new database, this database will be created on the memory card
press menu
edit
select all, this will select all your contacts
press menu
more options
copy to
select the new database that you have created on the memory card
your contacts will start to be copied across to the new database.

Step 2. Backup Calendar to memory card

load calendar
press menu
more options
save as
browse to the memory card and save the file.
This will save all your entries and alarms to a file.

Step 3. Backup Messages to memory card

load messaging
press menu
tools
message storage
change to memory tab
change memory in use from communicator to memory card
select move from right hand side.
This will move all messages to the memory card.

If you do not want to do it this way, an alternative is available.

Load filemanager and copy the folder called mail from communicator\system to memorycard\system

Step 4. No Memory card installed, use pc suite instead

If you do not have a memory card (why not! :)) use the data suite to do a backup of your communicator.

Latest data suite can be downloaded from nokia

http://www.nokia.com/cda1/0,1080,1910,00.html this is for the 9210
http://www.nokia.com/cda1/0,5184,4856,00.html this is for the 9210i

Step 5. Applications Installed

Make a note of all the applications you have installed so that you can re-install them after the format. To get a list of applications installed go to control panel\install remove and write the non-nokia applications you have installed.

Step 6. Format

Reboot the communicator
When you see the two hands appear press ctrl+shift+f
You will get a prompt on screen asking you to confirm that you wish to format the communicator. Select yes
Wait until it has formatted the communicator.
After format you will have to enter basic information again, such as your contact card, date and time entries.

After you have entered this data and the communicator is up and running, reboot.

Restore

Now you are ready to restore the information that you have backed up.

Restore Contacts
Load contacts
You should see the database that you created earlier on the memory card.
Open it
Press menu
Select all
Menu
More options
Copy to
And copy them back to the communicator

Once copied back you can delete the database that is on the memory card.

Restore Calendar

Load calendar
Press menu
More options
Import
Browse to where you originally saved the file and select it
It will now start importing back all your data.

Installing Nokia Software.

You need to find out what version is your communicator.
To find out the version press *#0000# in the front keypad.
It will display your version.

Now go to the nokia website and download the software that you want to install.

9210 software
http://www.nokia.com/cda1/0,1080,1913,00.html select your version and proceed

9210i software
http://www.nokia.com/cda1/0,1080,2038,00.html select your version and proceed

you can choose to either download all the software and install it, or only install the software that you use.

You will get an option as to where you want to install the software when you are installing them, choose d: (memory card) if you have one, to save space internally on the communicator.

File Manager will ALWAYS be installed on c:

Restore Messages

Load file manager and copy (not move) the mail folder from memory card\system\mail to communicator\system

Restart the communicator after this, load messaging and see if your messages are all there or not.

WARNING
This has NOT worked for everybody, some people have not being able to restore their messages using the procedure. So you have been warned. I do not take any responsibility of lost messages.

If you installed all the apps in MMC and do not intend to format the MMC, just backup the c:\system\install directory and then restore after you have formated the device.

This way you don't lose the informations about installed software and installed log.

I and any other contributor do not take any responsibility for any information that you may lose whilst following this guide.

If anybody has some information they would like to add to this guide, let me know and I will add it (credit will be given :))

Good work sektor_1. Very complete, easily understood & well thought.

Btw,

there is a double step 4. So I assume 4a & 4b.

In 4b applications installed section,

if u installed all the apps in MMC, & not intend to format the MMC

just backup all the c:\system\install directory & then restore after

formated the device. So u didn't lost the informations about

installed software & installed log.

What do u think ?

If there is a memory card on your device, it is better to reformat it before reformatting the device (as step 6.a).

6.a. Reformatting the Memory Card (D: drive)

Here is how to reformat the MC:

a. uninstall all the applications installed on d:. If Daemon is still running, you cannot reformat the MC. To stop it, press Shift+Ctrl+O(zerro).

b. Move your important documents/backup files (created by word, sheet, RMR Banking, etc and also Calendar backup file, dbProfile.db, etc) from d: to c:. The number of docs/files you have to move depends on the free space on c: you have. It is faster way than backuping or restoring them from MC to PC or from PC to MC.

c. go to Office button, select File Manager icon, then select File/Memory_card/Format_memory_card. If it does not work, you can reformat MC by using Windows Explorer (select the drive, click right button on the mouse, select Format).

d. after reformatting d:, restore/move back your files (on step b) to d:.

6.b. Reformatting the C: drive
.....as explain by sektor_1.

I dont really agree with that denams. I think it would be better if it was formatted right at the start, because if you format it right before you format the commy how will you backup your contacs/sms/calendar to the mmc?

what do you say?

Also I have updated the word document to include pictures :-)

Before reformatting both c: n d:, you could copy all your files (includes your document files n contacs/sms/calendar backup) from d: to PC by using PC Suite.
Or, just copy-paste them (but not for the apps) from d: to PC manually on the windows explorer.

Instead of copying into PC, you could copy or move the backup files from d: into c: (I do not need to backup ringtones, wallpaper, etc since they have already been on my PC hard disk).

Why can I do that? After unistalling all the apps (but not for All_Nokia_* app), you get more free space on c: and this free space can be used as a temporary storage for your document file or contacs/sms/calendar backup.

I always reformat my memory card before reformating the device because FILE MANAGER app is installed in drive c:.

Just after reformatting the memory card but before reformatting your device, move back your files from c: into d: (create new folders first with the same folder names of the old ones, eg. d:\Other\Backup files or d:\Other\MyDocs).

Reformat your device n reinstall your applications.

Restore your contacs/sms/calendar backup to their appropiate subfolders, eg. copy your calendar backup into c:\system\data and myContact file into d:\system\data.

I always follow these steps to reformat my commy (almost once a month) and have no problems.
I suggest you to move your word document (make your backup first) from memory card to c: (if you still have free space) or to PC manually and see what happend with your restored file.

[brother sektor_1, I have to go home now since my office working time is only untill 4.30 pm and see you on monday]
