Nope,
The IR used in phones (and computers) has its own protocol (called IrDA, InfraRed Data Association)
TVs and VCRs use no common protocol and vary greatly between makes and generations.
Unless somebody wrote software for these phones which managed to gain control of the IR device itself (unlikely) its not possible to control TVs or VCRs with a phone.
Get a multi function remote :)

Hi there :)
Actually there is a software available... it is called "IrRemote" and i know only of versions for the symbian-driven series-60 phones (3650/7650). Do a google search on that (IrRemote for Nokia) and check out if this is available for series-40 phones as well......
But i would doubt it since the series-40 phones (7250 etc) java-applications are unable to use the phone's IR port, such as for two-player games etc.
Good luck....
Kind regards
Thanh
