3510i data cable

Hello,
Ive just bought a data cable for my 3510i and ive plugged it into the serial port and into the back of my fone.
Problem is - what next?
My fone has no power so how can it be seen by my PC?
None of the software i have can see the fone, and ive tried it on 3 different PCs!
please can anyone help?

in case you haven't figured it out - by "omg im dumb sorry" did you mean that you have figured it out??

The battery goes on top of the plastic bit of the cable so that the contacts are touching.
