Provided the Datacable connector has protection Zener Diodes on the phone side that prevents voltages exceeding approximately 3V (normally 2.7V), and you ensure the phone is powered OFF when disconnecting, you should not have a problem.

The cheaper models may well not have this protection, and could allow a higher voltage to be presented. e.g. TTL Voltage of 5V.

RS232 Levels are of the order of -10 to +10 Volts, but in practise are usually about -8 to + 8V. This is what comes from the Serial Com Ports of Computers.

The Datacables for the 3510i types are known as F-Bus which is TTL, M-Bus versions are of the RS232 type.

I work with this sort of equipment on a daily basis, but not in the mobile phone side. Except the GSM Modem equipment, which is a Data only type of Mobile Phone.

I hope this is of use to you?
