I'm a bit puzzled about the message alert tone. I have it set from the menu to give just a "Beep once", and when I preview it, it does just that, a simple beep. Yet when the phone receives a message, it's not this that I hear, but something completely different, a sound that isn't even on the phone. It's hard to describe, I dunno, like a couple of frogs mating! Or some insects or something.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Hi.
I have a 3510i, the sound you describe sounds like the Message Alert Tone that I use. It is called "Cicada".

If I go to "Beep once" I also get the single beep sound, BUT, what you need to do is to go to the "Ringing tone" setting at position 6, you will see when you select it that "Cicada" is selected. Above it is "Carnival 2" and below it is "Clubbin" There are many to choose from, but I like Cicada. just select the one you prefer, it is as easy as that.

Thanks for the reply.

However, as far as I can tell, I can't select a Message Alert tone (like Cicada) - the only options I have under that are beep once, ascending, ringing tone, off, standard and special. I can select an "Incoming call alert", and currently have it set for "Ringing", and can then select the "Ringing tone", and have it set for "Ring ring" (yes, I know, with all the polyphonic shit that is available, I have the simple ring-ring!).

Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with the noise it makes, it just would be nice to know exactly why it's making that sound. Anyone else have any ideas.

Hi again.

I wonder if someone has deleted your Ring Tones?
If you go to Menu 4,(Tones) Select "Tone settings".
Then select 5 "Message alert tone" you will see on the bottom right "Ringing tone"
Press "Select" the list reads:-
1: Off
2: Standard
3: Special
4: Beep once
5: Ascending
6: Ringing Tone <Select this one>

You should now have a list of Ringing tones, these are the same ones that can be used for "Incoming call alert", if not, then they have been deleted.

Please let us know what you find.

Thanks JW. What you say above is correct, when I select "Ringing tone" from the list under "Message Alert tone", I can then select one of the 30 odd tones on the phone to use as a message alert tone.

The weird thing is when I have it set for a simple "Beep once", I get the little preview when I set it, and it sounds just like that, a simple beep. But when the phone receives a message, the sound is completely different, like the froggy/insect type sound I refered to in the first post. It's not the "Cicada" tone you mentioned.

Initially I thought it related to what I had set for the ringing tone, which I have set as the "Ring ring" tone, but I've played around with different ringing tones, but when a message is received, it's always the same froggy/insect type sound.

Thanks for your input though, it's much appreciated. I know now that I can set the message alert tone to any of the 30 odd tones on the phone.
