What is 3GP?

3GP - is the new mobile phone video file format.
3GPP, 3GPP2 are the new worldwide standard for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks. Defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project and 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 respectively, these standards seek to provide uniform delivery of rich multimedia over newly evolved, broadband mobile networks (3rd generation networks) to the latest multimedia-enabled wireless devices. Tailored to the unique requirements of mobile devices, 3GPP and 3GPP2 take advantage of MPEG-4, the standard for delivery of video and audio over the Internet.

Extensions:
.3gp 3GPP standard, GSM Network, Video: MPEG-4, H.263, Audio: AAC, AMR
.3g2 3GPP2 standard, CDMA2000 Network, Video: MPEG-4, H.263, Audio: AAC, AMR, QCELP.

The evolution of high-speed wireless digital networks is based on two predominant technologies — GSM and CDMA2000. Both types of 3G networks are currently being deployed worldwide to offer consumers a variety of on-the-go multimedia services.

3GPP and 3GPP2 Mobile Infrastructure Solutions — Many of the world’s largest telecommunications infrastructure companies provide 3GPP and 3GPP2 mobile content delivery products and services to operators. Examples include:
* Alcatel
* Ericsson
* Nokia
* Siemens Mobile
* Sun Microsystems

3GPP and 3GPP2 Mobile Phones — Many of today’s new mobile phones offer 3GPP and 3GPP2 content capture and playback capabilities. Leading providers of these standards-based multimedia phones include:
* Motorola
* NEC
* Nokia
* Panasonic
* Sanyo
* Sharp
* Sony Ericsson
* Toshiba
* Qualcomm

How to convert .3GP movies, taken with mobile phone, into .AVI ?

Convert 3gp to avi with QuickTime

Download QuickTime Pro at http://www.apple.com.
If you have older version of Quicktime player or still have problems with playing 3gp files then just download and install Quicktime Alternative.

1) Open your .3gp movies in QuickTime Player.
2) Press File -> Export...
3) Enter filename.
4) Choose type of output file (Export: Movie to AVI (.AVI), Movie to DV Stream (.DV) or Movie to Quicktime Movie (.MOV)).
5) For AVI: press Options -> Video Settings -> choose DV - PAL (for better quality of re-compression).
6) Click Save! That's all.

Convert 3gp to avi with 3gpToRawAvi converter

Download the 3gpToRawAvi converter from here:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/downloads/3gpToRawAvi.zip

Unzip 3gpToRawAvi.zip and move folder '3gpToRawAvi' to, for instance, C:\3gpToRawAvi.
Move a .3gp movie file you want to convert to the same folder (C:\3gpToRawAvi).
Then go to the command window:
1. Click on the Start button
2. Click on Run
3. Type in "cmd" and click OK to display the dos window
4. If you're not in C:\> go to C:\> by typing "c:" followed by Enter
5. In C:\> go to C:\3gpToRawAvi> by typing "cd 3gpToRawAvi" followed by Enter
6. In C:\3gpToRawAvi> type "3gptorawavi -o " followed by Enter
Note: Replace with the .3gp file name without the .3pg extension and with the .avi file name of your choice. Eg. "3gptorawavi Video1 -o Video2"
7. The new raw avi file will be placed in the same folder.

Note: A bit of experimentation shows that, on XP anyway, 3gpToRawAvi won't work if it's folder, or any of it's parent folders have a space in the name. For instance if 3gpToRawAvi is in "D:\documents and settings\" or in any folder within "D:\documents and settings\" then you'll get an error when you try to run it.

Convert 3gp to avi with Akiles 3gp to avi converter

Download: http://www.mitsoftware.com/akiles/3gptoavi2.zip

Run the program from C:\example. Where example is whatever you choose to call the folder but it can't have spaces in it. Then select a .3gp source file, select an .avi filename and click Convert. The 3gp and avi file's folders or paths can't have spaces either.

@mrWhite

seems like nobody needs to ask again, i've never needed to convert my videos before. But I might give it a go to keep upto date.

Would this conversion have some problems coz dependent upon the make/model. A useful tip I was given recently was that NEC e313 works better with WMV9 than 3GP. The assumption above is coverting from 3GP when it might not be 3GP encoding? Or have I misunderstood?

The above isjust a guide for 3gp conversion, but you won't get wm9 files produced by your phone.

here is the info I received

-------------------
Using the free Windows Media Encoder.
A 2 pass VBR encode of 64kb/s for video and 20kb/s mono 44100Hz for audio with a framerate of 15fps works well.
I guess with a music video you'd want to use a higher bitrate for the audio for better sound quality.

Encoding the same video to WMV9 and 3GP formats showed WMV9 to be MUCH superior.

The e313 only supports WMV if encoded in it's most basic settings.
If you decide to give Windows Media Encoder a try i can post a Windows Media Profile - a template of settings which will work with your e313...
