when i entered the code the phone set it was unlock but when i put my vodafone sim card in i received a messege saying SIM card registration failed.

I think you have a BARRED Fone
deu to have been Reported Lost or Stolen
the only thing you can do is swap it with some one overseas

The fone works fine when i swap back to my orange sim. could the vodafone sim be the problem?

it can be that the sim card is not Regited or is not compatable with your fone try an other sim card a newer one
