I would like to enable GPRS on my Mobile. However I would like to know if I can hook up my phone to my computer and then browse the Internet, by using the phone as a modem.

Hi there :)
OF COURSE YOU CAN use that phone as a modem! Because you can use almost ANY GPRS-phone as a modem!!
What you need is the following:
A cable to connect that phone wioth your computer. Since modem drivers are only original, you need an original cable, too, a DKU-5 from Nokia. No, it won't work with a fake. The cable isn't cheap, but you can do other things with it as well. Oh of course, IR does the same job, if you use a laptop or a IR equipped PC.
THEN you need to have data services (GPRS!) enabled by your network provider. Simply call them and ask them to activate it for you, it might take an hour or a day, maybe two, and might cost more, ask first! Then, after enabling it, they can also send the appropriate settings to you right via SMS ("SMS push") and you don't need to bother with the settings yourself.
After that, you go to www.nokia.com and download the modem drivers for your model (6610). Install that bit on your machine, and you're good to go. Connect the phone to your machine by either cable or IR, and just use the phone as a modem... as simple as that! You can dialup to your usual ISP (which will cost you ISP time plus kilobytes transferred on the GPRS connection) or you may use your network provider as ISP, if they offer that (most providers do!). Expect speeds around 40 kb/s and somewhat instable connections, but it will work just fine :)
Kind regards.....

Thanks.
I got a DKU cable from http://www.mobileaction.com
Would that work?
Where exactly do I get the gprs modem drivers from?
Are they with PC Suite 5?

Hi :)
If that is a DKU-5 cable, it will work. If it is a FAKE DKU-5, it *might* work, but i can't promise that.
The drivers can be downloaded from www.nokia.com and, if youy got a CD together with the phone, should also be on it as well....... not too sure about PC Suite tough.
Good luck.....

I can connect my laptop to dial up internet service provides with my 6610 via IR.
But can I connect to the always-on mobile GPRS internet service via IR (which is free)? :-?
I guess you would connect as usual to GPRS from the mobile then network to the mobile to download web data.
Thanks,
Thanh

Hello :)
Normally the modem driver should take this job for you. I haven't tried it myself because i never had any means to hook up the phone with the computer, but usually you can use a phone (as modem!) in two ways:
To dial-up to an ISP (data call)
To use a always-on connection (GPRS)
Eventually you need to activate the GPRS connection on the phone first and then couple it with the computer, or couple first and then activate. Watch the "Phone connection" icon in your taskbar, and see if there is data transfer.
Then you eventually need to set your "internet options" (on the PC!) to work with the IR connection instead of the "modem". It should work the same way as if you go thru a LAN with another computer on the LAN being connected to the internet.
Kind regards.....
