hello

today i received a strange call. my 6610 began to ring, but it did with a different ring than the ringtone i have set up. it sounded like a regular telephone. well, anyway, i looked at the screen and it said "data call", and had a green "D" on the left side of the screen. i tried to answer but it said i had to look at the options first, or something like that. oh, i must add, that number that appeared on my screen as the data call was a regular number. i called it back to see what was going on, and it was a guy who had dialed the wrong number. i didnt ask him what it was. i guess i should have.

what could this "data call" be? i dont see anything on the manual. do any of you know what this is about? is it a fax? why would it not be on the manual?

Hi there :)

I tested this a while ago, trying to "receive a fax" on my 6610. I dialed my number via the fax machine, but it ringed normally, also showed no "D" or other iundication. When i "answered" the call, i could hear the shrill sounds of the fax machine, but nothing else.

BUT it could have been a call from a modem! Modems are digital... faxes (at least most of them) still analog, so a call from a modem could easier be classified as a "data call". Maybe the guy used a phone to dial up to his ISP like i had to do before i got my direct line (those apartment lines in Bangkok SUCK!) and maybe he accidentally got your number instead of the one he wanted to dialup to.

Just a suggestion......

Kind regards
Thanh

hey!

yes, you could be right.

what i dont understand is why would it not be in the manual. when i got that call, it actually gave me some options, which i cant remember, so there should be a place where you can read about it an find out how to use it...

i wonder if there are many other things that the phone can do, and we simply dont know about them because the manual doesnt talk about them...

LOL, modems are digital :)
And then ISDN phones are analog... hehe, right :)

Hi there :)

Modem: MOdulator/DEModulator. Converting of DIGITAL data into ANALOG sound. Receives data from Computer, converts it to audible ANALOG sound, which is sent thru the networks untill reaches destination. If destination is modem, too, process will be reverted, i.e. sound is demodulated into DIGITAL data and fed into the receiving computer. Direct receiving digital devices may detect source=digital and switch mode (mobile phone!)

ISDN: International Standard Digital Networking. Decodes analog sound into digital data, yet connects to analog phones too, call always indicated as ANALOG since digital transfer only from actual phone to Telco's system, there reconverted and sent ANALOG thru the networks untill reaching destination. If destination ISDN too, process is reverted, i.e. analog signal coded into digital and sent that last mile to the ISDN terminal/phone.

Try it! Call your mobile from a ISDN landline. Will it show a "D" for data call? It won't. Experience... have had ISDN in my home country. Then dial your mobile number, using the PC's modem. Quite likely you'll get the "D" shown, but not a must.

Kind regards.....
