My friend bought a second hand Nokia 5100 (NPM-6) and cannot make outgoing/incomming calls - a recorded message is heard from the service provider "This service is unavailable from this phone. Please contact your Service Provider".
I don't know if this is because the phone is locked to only one sp or not, but when I put my sim card in (Optus - Australia) the menu works etc.
Australian networks have also implemented a IMEI block for stolen/lost phones (and maybe this phone could have been that :-? ). Doesn anyone know what to do? will i have to change the IMEI?
Phone Details are:
IMEI: 351347300746922
CODE: 0509360
FCCID: LJPNPM-6
IC: 661E-NPM6

Hello :)
Did you try, after inserting your SIM card, if the phone then can make/receive calls? Or do you get a similar message?
It is possible that that phone is reported lost or stolen, and has therefor been IMEI-blocked by the provider. If that is the case, you can do several things with that phone:
-Since it was bought second hand, return it to the seller, who might be a thief.
-trade it with someone in another country - the phone will work there
-invest a gazillion $ to get the IMEI-changing equipment and "make" it working
-use it as a decoration in a fish tank
Fact is, the 5100 is a DCT-4 phone, and changing IMEI's to get around a IMEI-block is almost impossible, at least unaffordable. You will need to change a chip on the phone's PCB which is called "UEM" and is only once programmable. Then you need to flash the phone and write the new IMEI to the new UEM chip, special equipment required!
Besides this being illegal, it will cost you more than several brand new 5100's. Tell your friend to return it to the seller, since it is unusable, and demand his money back.
Kind regards.....

Well, have you tried the obvious and contacted your Service Provider? Just incase it is stolen, do so from a pay phone and be sure not to give out any details about yourself. Also, with that I.M.E.I. block (as I live in Australia too), each Network Provider is doing it seperately, therefor the previous owner may have only blocked it on Telstra and Optus, but not Vodaphone, so maybe you can test this out and your friend can just change Telecomunication Providers. If it's a stolen phone and you can find the seller, attempt to get your money back. When I say your I mean your friend...

The 5100 you describe appears to be blocked..which has already been established above. Just a bit more info regarding the network IMEI blocking. Several months ago the Australian teleco's united after the success of the UK and formed a joint coalition of a blocked IMEI "black Book". Unless the phone was stolen/found/lost about 6 months ago you will not be able to log on to any network that operates within Australia.
I have done several trades with people in the UK and would be hapy to recommend them if you like. Most will trade for equivelant popular phones or will pay via bank draft. I would assume that you would get at least a 7210 or a 6610 for a 5100 trade. It is important however not to send the phone until money is recieved i have lost a fair bit of money finding honest traders!!!
If i can be of help e-mail on

O! That's no good for phone thiefs! But it makes me glad as personally I am against them due to the fact that I paid good money for mine and wouldn't want it stolen!
