Could someone please enlighten me to the difference between locks 1-4. I understand that the unlock codes currently only are out for lock 1. But I really don't know what that means. Thanks. If there's another place I can find this please point me to it, I poked around, but couldn't find it.

there are 4 different locks, and codes to open them.

lock 1 - mcc+mnc = provider lock, lock the phone to a certain network.
lock 2 - gid1 = lock to type of simcard of that provider, for example prepaid or contract.
lock 3 - gid2 = similar to lock 2, but never used.
lock 4 - msin = lock to one specific simcard, the phone will only accept that simcard.

normally the networks close lock 1 only, so entering code one removes the restriction, but some networks close lock 2 also, and make it impossible to unlock the phone with code 1.

it is now possible to calculate code 2

So, if I tried to unlock the code successfully with a COM1 code, then I should just try unlocking it with a COM2 code? Is there any way to see which locks are on without trying the unlock codes themselves? I don't want to hard lock my phone. Thanks for the help + clarification.

com1 and com2 is the number of the com port of your computer, it has nothing to do with the codes.

there is a way to check which locks are closed, by trying another simcard of another provider.
if it works - phone is unlocked.
if not - lock 1 is closed (and possibly others too).

now, try to unlock it with code 1.
if it accepts the simcard after that - it is fully unlocked.
if not - lock 2 is probably closed.

to check what locks are closed on dct3 phones, use these codes

#pw+1234567890+1#
#pw+1234567890+2#
#pw+1234567890+3#
#pw+1234567890+4#

the number at the end of each code refers to the lock

#pw+1234567890+2#
#pw+1234567890+3#

try these only once, because if the lock is closed - you will lose one try.
however, this is a bit different from dct4 phones, here if the lock is not closed - it will display "sim was not restricted", and you will not lose a retry for that one.
