Symbian is an Operating system (OS), it is the same as Windows or Linux.

Symbian is the Operating system (OS) just like Dtofte sais,en why don’t the use windows os , en symbian is becouse u need less memory for some aplications that with a windows os , so u will have more room to put more apps or just leave u some space to screw around :-P

You don't need as much space for the apps because you're talking about a phone here, not a computer. It's not the operating system (as some palm pilots have their own versions of Windows), but it's the hardware specs of the phone in general.
