Just got this 6610, and am unfamiliar with SIM cards and locking.

Is it correct to assume the phones are locked to a provider to keep you from switching easily?
If I unlock my phone, will it still work just as before?
Now that it is unlocked, does that mean I can go to another country and get a pre-paid SIM and plug it into the phone and it will work in that local country?

I under the how-to part of unlocking the phones....I just need some clarification as to WHY you do this, and WHEN you should do this....

Thanks in advance for reading and taking the time to respond...

Yes

Should do mind :)

As long as that county supports the bands the phone uses (1800mhz, 1900mhz and 900mhz)

Why? so you can use it on different networks

When? whenever you want, although some networks will say you have invaludated the warranty if you don't pay them for the unlock code.
