I have looked for these all over the internet, and have not found them. So I will write what i know, and perhaps the moderators if they find this information correct and useful will sticky it.
Tools:
1. MIDI Synth Software...my tool of choice: Noteworthy Composer...because the trial meets my needs and appears to not expire (provided you ALWAYS use the 'SAVE As' and not save...) ** http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/composer/evaluate.htm
2. MIDI to SP-MIDI converter (though technically optional for most phones it will produce better music by Prioritizing the instruments for when you accidentally exceed your 'voices' limit) My tool of choice: MIDIScale by MMSguru because its free for non-comercial use ** http://www.mmsguru.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=1
(btw this tools claims to be able to add Vibration to MIDIs but is highly unsucessful...believe me i've tried...the good news is its the best for SP-MIDI)
3. Someway to get the tone to your phone. Please search elsewhere for this information. (My tools of choice: Bluetooth/IRda and Oxygen Phone Manager II/Nokia Suite 5.x) **
Steps (assuming you have above tools or comparable installed)
1. Find/Create your dream midi.
2. Open MIDI in MIDI Syth Software
** in Noteworthy Composer accept all the defaults when opening the file)
2a. Add a 'musical staff' with the cleff symbol (backwards C: looking thing) and timing/meter symbols (looks like a fraction i.e. 4/4)
** in Noteworthy use CTRL-A to add a staff, and use copy and paste to get the symbols from another staff using your mouse to select, control-c to copy, place your mouse on your new staff, and press ctrl-v to paste.
2b. Add your beat. Try starting out with constant quarter notes, anywhere in the staff. You can later mess with longer or shorter notes and rests for pauses... try finding the percussion line in MIDI and matching the beat there...You will have to find the 'Art' of rhythm in some other article though 8-) .
* In Noteworthy this can be done by selecting the quarter note symbol in the tool bar (look like a filled in circle with a stem, no flag), selecting your staff anywhere (try the middle of it) and pressing [enter] repeatedly. (alternatively you can add pauses in your beat with the spacebar, so [enter], [enter], [spacebar], [enter] would cause a vibration like zzzzz,zzzzz,.......,zzzzz)
2c. Turn your beat into a vibration. There are 3 things a Nokia phone requires to recognize a Vibration.
First the Channel/Staff must only have 1 layer of notes: it must be MonoPhonic
Second the Instrument must be #125 (commonly labeled Telephone Ring)
Third you must use Patch Banks or Bank Select message Or Control Changes (basically these are special instrument instructions): Control Change #0 must equal 121 and Control Change #32 must equal 6
In Noteworthy: Right-click anywhere in your new staff and choose Staff Properties(if you dont see it you are probably selecting a note...click somewhere in the staff again.) On the Instrument tab scroll way down need the end of the list and choose 'Telephone Ring', check the check box 'Select a patch bank' Enter 121 for Controller [0] and 6 for Controller 32.
2c. Save your file.
*Unless you purchase Noteworthy you will need to always use Save As in the file menu to save.
3. Convert MIDI to SP-MIDI (and prioritize the Vibration to 2nd or 3rd most important)
Open Midi in MIDIScale. Go through Each channel, and choose the proirity for each channel (ie how important is this sound), from 1 - your number of MIDI voices. (you can listen to each channel in SOLO mode to hear what it represents) Each channel should have a different priority, the MELODY of the song should be number one, and the TELEPHONE RING should be right up there (probably 2). Also some channels have multiple simultaneous voices, there is a setting to downsize the voices per channel. (if your phone only supports 4 voices, and your melody has 5, and you set the melody as priority 1 and the telephone ring as priority 2, everytime the melody plays 4 notes at a time, the vibration will be ignored...etc)
3a. Save new SP-MIDI
4. Copy to phone
5. Test (under most circumstances the MIDI should vibrate even when NOT being opened as a ringtone...i suppose some phones may not do this...)
ADVANCED USER QUICK INFO (directly from NOKIA ring tone white paper):
Vibra information must be composed on one melodic MIDI channel. Vibra program selection is done using a sequence of three consecutive messages on a single channel: 1. Bank select message (Control Change #0) with value Bank# MSB 121 (79H) 2. Bank select message (Control Change #32) with value Bank# LSB 6 (06H) 3. Program Change message with value (Prog#) 125 (7CH) In SP-MIDI, all channels have defined channel priority. To ensure that vibra is always played (at all polyphony levels), vibra channel should have a high channel priority.
