Hmm...
Yes and maybe.
For Anonymous number most GSM operators accept #31#xxxxxxxxx and xxxxxxxxx person will not see your number, unlike *31# or was it #31* which will forcefully show your nuumber.
While with SMS is different. In Portugal 2/3 of the GSM operators will send an Anonymous message if you enter *conf* xxxxxxxxxxxxxx as a message, when entering the number, you just do it as normal (no special code here).
This has been tested in Portugal and it works (Optimus and TMN, does not work for Vodafone because of their policies which I agree with as a matter of fact)
I can not say the same for other countries but that is a matter of experimenting and finding out ;)

-Dave

Hmm...
It doe snot matter what phone you have, these features are Network dependant, so your Network Provider either supports these features or doesn't.
So you could have the oldest mobile in the world and this should still work, depending on your Network ;)
I've tested this both in Australia and Portugal and it works (the *conf* thing I have only seen been done in Portugal)

*conf* won't work in finland.
and i've read that there should be no way to hide your number in sms.
but, if sp allow this, they don't care about privacy.
spamming is illegal.

Hmm...
I think that it is incorrect to have a way to hide your mobile number in SMS... My girlfriend was being harrased via SMS by someone and the ger Network Provider wouldn't say who...
Private Caller ID is ok, but Private SMS ID is not in my personaly opinion...
Anybody else have the a different opinion which they would like to discuss?

calls don't have to be picked up so theoretically a telemarketer or other miscreant can call your phone and you can not pick up if the phone number is hidden or one of someone you dont want to talk to. You pay no money. SMS on the other hand usually costs something and there is no way to block it. If the sms origin was easily hidden then someone could send you 100,000 smses and you wouldnt be able to do anything about it except complain or pay the bill.

Hmm...
Touche.
That is a good point... so it is illegal to withold SMS ID, so to speak?
That would make sense in a way.

in the phils, both do not work, but i don't what some people are doing when they call my girlfriend's phone and it just says "call" and there is no number that appears, not even in the call register, and when we answer it, the line suddenly becomes busy. I guess it might be an internet-based program, but i don't know how.. Is there anybody who knows it or who knows how to trace the person doing it? Help plz..

Hmm...
It could be a home phone for example or a fax line... those numbers can have witheld ID right? I mean you can ask for a silent home phone number right?
You most probrably won't find out who is doing that though :(

call with someone elses account. Doesnt exactly hide your phone number but if you have someone elses # showing then they still can't find you. Or you can call through some telephone company systems that lose your ani and CID information in the switching.

goodlab,
i had an experience with the same thing.it's a call from a globe payphone.and you know what, they don't get charged even if you answer the phone.it's because, as long as they don't press the "*" button, they won't be charged but they'll here you, though you won't get to hear them, nor any background.
this is one problem which can only be solved by having a new no.
i hope this answers your querry about people calling your GF.

Hello guys,
this #31# thing won't work in Brasil, at least not on the Oi network (724.31).
As for the SMS code #conf#, confidentiality doesn't seem an issue since you can freely send SMS from the web on my GSM operator's website (www.oi.com.br) and all you get as ID is the number 732.
All SMS's sent from the web are received from no. 732. THat's pretty anonymous for me and I have received all sorts of spam from Oi's web service.
That's my 2 cents, thanks everyone!

Hiding you number when calling is no problem.
On Nokia 3310:
Settings -> Call settings -> Own number settings -> off (6-1-4).
As this is a built in feature in the phone, i can't see why it shouldn't work in other countries than Norway.

Hi GeeZuZz,
I tried that with my 3410 and my brother's 3310 and still the phone number was displayed on caller ID.
I think caller ID is set by the service provider alone after all.
Still, thanks! It never ocurred to me to try the phone's own menu option! :P

Ok, you may be right... however my first mobile was a 1610 and that did SMS ;) I don't remember any Nokias prior to 1610, were there any?
Most likely other brands didn't do SMS, maybe Nokia either, but all I remember is the 1610, so yeah ;)

Greetings,
Well, that feature is pretty popular, I thought everyone fiddles around with their new phone like I do ;) If I want to call someone anonymously I use the #31# so I do not go into the menu, just to be different :)
About displaying the number even if the option is disabled (not network default, but disabled) then that would be something to check with your network provider as this option should work from just changing it on the mobile... or maybe it's the mobile, try your brother's SIM on your phone, disable the option and see if you get the same result. Just a simple sugestion ;)

Mike, I have also found that when receiving overseas calls on Globe or Smart, I simply get "Call". I think that some overseas trunks do not support caller id.
(BTW, I'm in Angeles, Pampanga)
