With Bluesniff, Redfang or BTscanner for LINUX you can read sms, get phome numbers and many more from BT enabled phones.

@iceman welcome, u deserved it :)

well, heard of bluesnarfing long ago, and it only works on linux platform. it could b pretty scary, when the linux laptop is equipped wif a class 1 bluetooth, so it could scan in a 100 m radius!!! and thats 200 m diameter!! :-o

yes but phones transmit under 10meters so theres no way 2 way communication can take place above 10 meters....

cheers ;)

Forgive me if I don't believe it until I see it in action

But the idea does give me the creeps ...

hmmm.... honestly, im not really sure how those class 1 bluetooth devices work... but someone on tis forum gave this theory:

imagine u got a 10 metre chain, and can whack anyone in radius of 10 m, then some mighty guy came along wif a 100 m chain! so, u cant beat him, but he can beat u!

so, i figured, fones can send stuff to the pc, but the pc equipped wif the bt device can send stuff!

i hope this theory wun happen, imagine ppl hacking u 100 m away, and u got no way of finding out who wif ur 10 m range.

radio frequency communications and chains are totally different things...bad analogy...lol

cheers ;)

They both need to establish a connection with each other.

yeah i think so too... they both have to connect to eachother in order to send a file... even if its from pc to phone. i have a 100m dongle and i cant send stuff from my pc from longer than about 5m. its on the back of my comp so i guess thats why it cant be fully 10m

nah not more powerfull but to do this kind of thing you need to modify the bluetooth stack ie the underlying protocall. To do which you need to change the source code. Since when have you heard of windows bluetooth or any other source code being available?

Normally the phone would have to be in range of the PC as it has to acknoledge the other devices as specified by the BT protocall. But if you have a hacked BT procall maybe it would be possible to force send a file from out of range of the phone. but still i doubt if as how would the PC know the phone is there in the 1st place - as it would only transmit its presence for 10m? maybe if the phone was in range and no longer it could be done.

It does happen!

I have heard of people with BT laptops connecting to peeps phone using default password and then dialling out to internet on someones mobile. So it's slow, find a busier pub and go after a 3g phone! Problem solved.

Yes it is possible to do, yes it is being done. I would advise peeps to disable bluetooth were possible or at least tie it to your devices and CHANGE THE DEFAULT PASSWORD!

Imagine the scenario....
You're in the pub, 'someone' connects to your phone over BT and uploads some really nasty pictures.

How could you prove that you didn't take/want those pictures??????

In the current UK climate, that scares me.

Dave.

you guys leave your bluetooth turned on how come ??? i mean if you turn off your blue tooth it saves battery life and no more fear of this bluesnarfing bluejacking etc. ??? it's just common sense right.

Exactly. Who actually leaves their bluetooth on anyway? I sure as hell don't.

I never leave my bluetooth on all the time.

But Bluetooth mainly drains the battery juice if there is an active connection. Otherwise, it's just a feature running in the background using specks of spark.

I only turn it on if my friend wants to send some polyphonics or wallpapers, or I send them the shit. Vice versa

well, i do leave it on 24/7... but in hidden :-P

i leave it on, so as to transfer files and receive them, wifout switching on. and its convenient, as i play multiplayer wif my mates alot :D

Good bluetooth link is as good as the lowest powered among the devices. It means that if the first bluetooth devices has 100 meters range but the second is only 10 meters, the effective comm range of the 2 devices will only be up to 10 meters max. That is also the reason why a 100-meter range bluetooth device cannot "hack" to a 10-meter device if they are more than 10 meters apart because even if the 100-meter can reach the 10-meter device, the latter can't acknowledge back and the communication between them will not push through.
