I've searched my ass off through these forums, and I've got Virtual Dub, the newest DivX encoder (for PC), and the lonely cat codec (for my phone) but where in the hell is this "lame mp3" codec? I google it and it says it's some type of prog. to teach you how to encode mp3?
-sits in stupor-
If anyone's got a link and some instructions, I'd sure as hell appreciate it.
Either that or some other tips for getting sound on Virtual Dub

Yeah the LAME people get round all copyright restrictions etc etc by releasing only the source code and saying it should be used as reference only to learn how to make a mp3 encoder.
There are plenty of versions out there compiled by others -- type LAME into google and you can download it from page at second hit it gets.

Hi,
I'm afraid you haven't looked far enough mate, there is a long thread on this very forum about Virtual Dub and Smart Movie files.
Check it out : http://nokiafree.org/forums/t62688/h/s.html
And get my settings which I'm proud to say work quite well :)

Much thanks, coolice. Evidently you're pretty good at workin these video programs. Had any luck with getting smartmovie converter to work better than virtual dub? I'm all for better quality videos, but if I can do it with the smartmovie converter interface (easy as hell) vs. the virtual dub interface (so... many... options...) I'm there. I used to use helix plus (I love cracked 200 dollar programs for free hehe) but realone just wasn't cuttin it.
P.S. whered u get your cracked smartmovie player? aivanet or group? link it if you know a page with good instructions/downloads

Hi smpballa240,
Your welcome glad to help mate. I have played around a lot with these video apps in an effort to get better quality out of them, Virtual Dub seems to be the best so far. One thing to maybe try is getting the LCG's converter to use the DIVx codec instead of xVID.
I know what your saying about the LCG's converter, it is so easy to use and takes in pretty much any file type with no hassle. But I think it's downfall is in that criteria, because it has to read so many varied file types it's open to more mistakes during the conversion process.
Hopefully as the application moves forward so will the ability of the converter to make better quality films.
Like yourself I used Helix before and spent time perfecting my settings. I used it a few days ago for the first time in ages to make a film and the quality is so poor compared to Smart Movie. I'm waiting to hear what the new PvPlayer is like, supposedly it to can now play full screen.
As for the Smart Movie player/converter I have, again like always Aivanet is where I got my latest version. Get V2.22 posted by Iceman5 for the .app file and then download V2.24 for the new version. Use the .app file to fix the newest version.

Hows about audio? Anyone found any real nice LAME settings? @ coolice I finally installed it, but god damn that hissing when anyone even thinks of saying a word with an "s" in it...
And sorry to sound n00bish, but uhhh how u use an .app file to alter a program (i.e. smartmovie)?

Never mind on the .app files, figured her out.
But why the "audio compression is impossible" error? Link it if anyone finds any pages or other forums discussing this Vdub error. Coolice, you know anything about how to work around it? I'd rather not do the direct audio stream copy. My 800 meg Boondock Saints ends up at like 200 meg if I do. Not exactly the 60 megs i was hoping for like you did with fear and loathing (incredible movie). I got around 60 megs once before with Helix Plus, and quality was great. Damn that Realone player and its lack of full screen.
Sorry for the double posts.

Hi,
Using my Coolice_Virtual Dub3 settings I sometimes get this, not with all clips but most downloaded one's. I think it's just the way the clip has been encoded, possibly in a lesser compression ratio.
If you get this go into the Compression Dialogue box and select a lower bit rate, normally I go for 32000Hz 80kbps CBR, Mono - 10KB's and that sorts it out.
I haven't tried any others as this 32000Hz setting works well.
