I'm a little new to flashing and want to know what it is exactly and when do you use it?
Thanks

Hi,
Flashing is originally a method to put data on a chip, the socalled firmware.
Additionally flashing can be used for updating the data on the chip, like from win98 to winXP.
As extras, some guys here analyse the flash files itself to understand the functioning, and add extras to it, the socalled modding.
True diehards here also made their own operating system(s) which independently run on a Nokia, though not use any of the Nokias firmware at all, just the hardware.
Like the idea of making a playstation from Ur pc.
For playing around on Nokias, U need two types of cables, the flasher cable (lpt port) which is able to send the bulks of firmware datas, the socalled flash.
And the data cable (com port) which is mainly used to give Nokias commands and change the settings.
Since after flashing the new data U always need to set the FAID, Flash Authorisation Id checksum.
I hope it was sufficient in some way...
Good luck
