Who here has EDGE support in their area? I'm tryin to get a feel for whether the 6630 will even be that useful in terms of its highspeed internet.

And does anyone know anything about EDGE networks in the States? I'm really not sure which providers use EDGE technology. Far as I can tell, there's 3 or 4 different high speed cell technologies here:
UMTS
EDGE
EV-DOx1

Someone please explain the differences between all of these to me. Any links are welcome, preferably English, but Spanish, French, and I guess German'll work too.

Hi there..

I have a 6230 myself and believe me.. EDGE works faster than any existing GSM connection. my approx download speed were 40 kbps. Now i'm in India and the only provider is HUTCH over here. dont know anything about other providers in other countries. But definitely EDGE rules...

Cheers

Australia doesn't have EDGE yet (does Hutch 3G?)

And if we do, EDGE will be f*****g expensive!

GPRS is so expensive, that it cost me about $32 just to download a theme for my 7610

Unbelievable ... :-x

32$ just for downloading a symbian theme!! thats outrageous..

I mean over here in India all we have to pay up is Rs. 99/month (roughly equals to 2.25$/month) for unlimited GPRS access.. the speed is around 14kbps.

EDGE comes as a free package along with GPRS over here.. so no extra rates. your mobile should support EGDE.. that's it. No seperate activcaions/registrations.. nothing at all.. totally free. all you hav to pay is for the GPRS connection..

Then it's happy donwloading for me.. ofcourse i'll be charged by the companies from whom i download some apps/themes, etc.. but downloads form free sites like tagtag/wapain, etc is absolutely free

Cheers mates...
You may want to migrate here to acces cheap GPRS

That is outrageous. I have t-mobile in the u.s. and unlimited GPRS is like 3 dollars a month. Of course, I've got the workaround. The phone's browser won't let me access their "t-zones" service. But simply by going through Opera (the trial version of course which I reset quite easily every 14 days), I can access internet ad nauseum. I've come to the conclusion that t-mobile's a good provider, here at least.

Anyway, I don't need to worry about 6630 anymore, I'm focused on 3230. Of course now I have to make sure I have a provider that uses 1900 mhz band and hopefully also provides EDGE. I really wish the U.s. wasn't so damn contrary with its 850 mhz mess. I think t-mobile and at&t provide 1900 mhz, since my 3650 runs on both, and as far as I know it doesn't work on the 850 mhz band. Plus AT&T is supposed to be bringing EDGE to the U.S. in full force soon. Someone please advise me on whether this is all true, I don't wanna end up with a 3230 and no use for it.
