If you try more than 5 bad codes your phone will be definitely locked. You will be able only to use it with the original network.
And then to unlock you need to use a cable no more by code.

There is no way to try more codes.
But why do you want to enter so many codes ? to learn unlocking ?

i am quite new to unlocking, so i typed in the calculator the network i wanted to change it to not the original network, so now i got about 2 go's left and there are about 7 to choose from.

earlier on i phoned up a mobile phone shop and asked if they unlock mobile phones and they said yes, so will it matter that i have 2 goes left to unlock the phone? or will they block the phone?

sorry if that all sounds stupid

Nothing is stupid.
The calculators are very reliable, and in a phone shop they will most probably inlock by cable so do'ny worry about hard locking, this is only possible by code.
You have to enter in the calculator the network where the phone is locked to.
Then you use the code +1 , then +7 if not enough.
Send me PM I will explain you in detail if you want more help.
