I'm a cheapskate. I have an older Nokia 5185i and it works fine except for one problem.

When I use menus or try and do more than one thing (make a call, add a number, for example) in series, or sometimes just when I'm accessing the phonebook the screen goes blank.

If I can remember where I am in the menu sequence, I can still (blindly) navigate and even make calls when the phone is in this state. But the screen does not come back alive until I turn cycle the phone on and off several times.

The backlight works fine.

Is this a common problem with this old model? I'd like to use this phone instead of buying a new one, so any pointers or help would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

See if pushing on the front screen/case area restores the screen, most of these type problems are a contact problem between the screen and PC board and cleaning the contact area usually corrects it. You would have to be handy with small tools and need a #6 torx screwdriver to get at the problem area.
