I have unlocked several Nokia phones successfully up to this point, but never a 6600. I received a supposed unlocked phone (eBay purchase) that was in excellent condition and immediately tested it with my foreign SIM (Smart Philippines) to see if it was really unlocked or not. I received a message "SIM card registration failed", followed by "Insert SIM Card".
After the above test, I assumed that the phone was not really unlocked. I immediately got out the unlock software and tried to unlock the phone. Curiously, I had the following results using the NokiaFree calc from this site:
Lock 1 SIM card was not restricted
Lock 2 Not Allowed
Lock 4 Not Allowed
Lock 5 SIM card was not restricted
Lock 7 Code Error
When I then placed my Cingular SIM in the phone, it worked PERFECTLY! I once again inserted my Smart SIM, and again received the SIM card registration failed. The SIM is good, as I can place the card into a 3660 phone, and I can send and receive messages without difficulties.
At this point, I am stumped......any ideas??
Thanks in advance,
Traveler

It is not locked for new SIM....I checked this. Also, the code 5, as shown in my initial post, comes back as "SIM card not restricted". The odd part is that if I put a non-functional SIM (such as an expired AT&T), I will get the same "SIM Registration Failed" message. However, after this message, it allows me to open the phone's menu and browse through the features, images, and settings. When I put my Smart (Philippines) SIM card in, I get the failed registration message, followed by "Insert SIM card". When this comes up, I cannot browse through the phone's features, etc. :???: :???: :???:
It seems as if the phone will not recognize/register a SIM from out of the country? Is this possible? The Smart SIM card works fine here with my 3660 that I unlocked myself.......This is making me nuts!
Thanks,
Traveler

OK....as a follow up to my first message.....
I received another T-Mobile phone (6600) that was LOCKED. I proceeded to use the code calc and tried code 5. Message came back "SIM restriction off" and it appeared that it was now and UNLOCKED phone......but NO....
Once again, I tried a Cingular SIM, which now works. However, when going back to the Smart Philippines SIM, it gave me the "SIM Registration failed" message, followed by "Insert SIM card" :-? :-?
Upon trying the code 3 (country lock?), it came back as "Not Allowed!".....
SO, is there something I am doing wrong? Is there another unlock for country that I am missing? I am frustrated.....as the problem is definitely now repeatable......for whatever that is worth......appreciate any help.

Yep....I always do that, as mentioned in my original post (code 7 provided a "code error" message). Again, using the codes, I found on the second phone the same problem.....code 7 gives "code error", and code 5 gave a restriction off message. Once the code 5 was entered, I could use another carrier's SIM (Cingular), but could not use a SIM from an out of country (Smart Philippines) carrier......

Once a phone is unlocked it will stay unlocked
Symbian Phones do not have 7 sim locks on them like other DCT4 (asic2,6,7)
Also different sims may have different voltages and phases
Seems to me that you have an uncompatable sim
Also providers can place software on sims so that it work only in certain phones (tracfone us/3uk UK)
Is there any other gsm providers that work on 1900 in the phillipines?
Otherwise I would just sell the phone coz it seems like it definitely work
I have had this problem before and its very iratating
One tip also is clean the sim with a rubber to eliminate static charge from the sim
This SIM has been tested/ used on the following phones without difficulties:
3100, 3200, 3650, 3660, 7250. All of the mentioned phones were second hand and unlocked by me using code gen software. Currently, I am using the SIM in a 3660 without any grief at all. Every time I put it in EITHER of the two 6600's, it comes up with the same registration error message (both phones are from T-mobile, but from different USA locations).
By the way, the SIM is not frequency specific. The SIM will work in the country you are in as long as:
A. Your SIM (phone service) is set for ROAM
B. The phone you use is compatible with the country's GSM frequency.
All of the SIM's in the Philippines are open (can be used on any phone) as they have a largely pre-paid market where people buy phones (mostly second hand) separately from the SIM.
In the end, you are right, it is very frustrating. I have one more 6600 coming my way, and if it does not work, I will sell them all to US customers!! I have to believe there is a good reason for this.....maybe I am wrong.
