8310 annoyance

I got a 8310 from a friend and have been trying to unlock it. Now I have tried several programs and all have failed, but the ones that can have put it in test mode (well it says test mode on the screen, but doesn't go any further) but then say connection failed and the phone locks up.
Any ideas ?
I have unlocked old nokias with straight 'plug it in the bottom' cables but not one with these stupid clips. Im using a cable that goes into my com port so does this make it a M or F Bus cable ?

did u try the force test mode way ? the one that u short the first 2 pins on the left of the mbus cable ? when u short them together u will have test mode without any software then after u do that use jic electronics unlocker and this will work 100% unless ur 8310 is 5.57 version then it will nto work unless u download it to a lower version
