Looks like a lot of people have been pi55ed off with Orange's 6680 homescreen. I have even had my phone reflashed with Nokia Generic but it didn't work with Line 2 and there were problems with PVPlayer. So my only choice is a Orange 6680 with the god awful homescreen. So letter time to Orange! Though it might me good to set up new thread to see the letters/comments/calls people send to Orange about this issue and also the replies they get back (if any!)
Here's mine to start
Dear Computer,
I am writing to express my disgust at the addition of the hideous (and non removable) Orange Home Screen on the Nokia 6680. Whatever possessed Orange to come up with this atrocious piece of software? This Home Screen completely disables the new Nokia Active Standby Screen, is ridden with bugs and hogs untold amounts of the phone’s memory.
Do you really pay good money to someone on your staff who thinks ‘I know, I have a good idea, lets remove Nokia/Symbian’s very latest innovation and spend money developing our own magnificently inferior version’? This behaviour is more suited to a public sector organisation who have £millions of taxpayers money to waste, not a cutting edge global technology company! One step forwards and two steps back…………
I wonder if you would be prepared to make an official statement regarding Orange’s immeasurable error of judgment in introducing this new Home Screen on the 6680? Perhaps you would also like to comment on the current employment status of the person responsible for its development and implementation?
It appears I am not the only person to have been so disappointed upon first powering up their eagerly awaited Nokia 6680 (which, when first released, has to be one of the worst examples of supply chain management I have ever seen - but that’s another matter!). At the end of this email I have listed a few of the many comments I found on the internet which encapsulate the sentiments of numerous frustrated customers (as for the language – all comments are verbatim!). I also notice that this very issue got a column in a recent addition of the industry magazine, Mobile News! So now we beg the question ‘What is Orange going to do to resolve the plight of so many disappointed 6680 customers?’
Very little appears to be the response so far! Well, many have been told to get the phone reflashed by Nokia but this will invalidate the warranty – great! And I wonder how happy Nokia are about this or if they even know that this is the advice being handed out by Orange Customer Services – I suspect there are a number of reflash fees going though to Nokia as warranty claims – which if I’m not mistaken should be the responsibility of Orange (I am waiting for Nokia’s official response on this).
It is such a shame that Orange seem to have no intention of being any more help - especially as trading standards have advised that Orange could well be guilty of supplying a product which is ‘not as described’. This is on the basis that the Nokia 6680 is clearly advertised and specified as having an Active Standby screen which can also be deactivated if so required. Now I don’t believe that Orange have stated in ANY of their promotional material or equipment specifications that this function is not available on an Orange branded Nokia 6680. Perhaps you could confirm whether this is the case? Assuming it is not stated anywhere; can you confirm that Orange would be prepared to accept the return of any Orange Nokia 6680s from customers who bought the product expecting a fully functional Nokia 6680? Could you also confirm that these customers would receive a full refund and be entitled to have their contract terminated accordingly?
What would be better is for Orange to release a new firmware version with the Home Screen removed or at least with an option to disable it. Then you could offer your disappointed customers a free firmware upgrade and everyone would live happily ever after! Any chance of this?
I think that’s all I have to say on the matter for now. I eagerly await your comments. One last thing – given my previous experience with Orange Customer Services I would like to offer you a challenge; which is that:
1) A human being reads this letter
2) A human being responds to this letter (and perhaps someone qualified to comment on the above would good (although I know that is probably asking too much))
2) You respond to ALL the comments and questions raised and don’t use your standard response template – which would be something along the lines of ‘Thank you for your recent enquiry…… however Orange are unable to comment on any specific points raised’! Or another great response is that ‘the people qualified to respond to your comments are not customer facing’!
To keep all the other dissatisfied 6680 customers informed, you will be pleased to know that I will be posting this letter and your response on the appropriate internet forums. I will also pass your comments on to trading standards.
Kind Regards

Well you'll know not to use Orange again! It does make me wondor what
monkey is in charge up their, stuff like this only makes people hate the
brand.
If ANYONE knows how to get rid of the Orange crap - please let us know. It's AWFUL!!
I'm happy to stay 'locked' to Orange, I just don't want their stupid handset software
Trust me man, thats what I feared too, but you can have your 6680 with Orange without the wanky homescreen, just like me, persistence is all thats required. The store that Resonate1 found in York, FoneFix can do it for you via post, 2 -3 day turn-a-round, just give them a call man.
I got my nice new phone delivered last Friday but didn't get a chance to actually go through the upgrade process until Sunday night. Since then, I've tried to like the interface but I can't. I HATE it and not the only one by the sounds of things.
After experiencing 3 and O2, I think Orange is the best network, although the tw*t that designed the orange homescreen needs throttling
I have just recieved my new 6680 on Orange. Its a great phone but I really dislike the Orange added home screen. Its supposed to enable you to navigate with ease but to be honest I would prefer the standard 6680 main screen from which I can use the navigation key, in various directions, to select messaging, camera, calender etc. How can I remove the Orange screen? Its annoying when you set things like the analogue clock yet still get the digital one, all because of the orange home page.
I got my 6680 today on orange. but like the 3230 and other recent symbian phones, its got that god awful orange homescreen which isent allowing me to change the background picture. so the question is, does anybody know how to remove it? ive looked in one of the third party file explorers. but i don't know what im looking for. anybody got any ideas?
Your no alone here mate, been waiting since the end of feb for this phone, finally got mine today, only to discover that orange have once again ruined a perfectly good phone by branding it to death
Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone know how to put the phone back to the standard Nokia functions i.e the middle action key, left for sms, right for calender, down for contacts etc... rather than the long winded Orange home page thing? I know by holding the main menu key and selecting "phone" it goes back to how it should be, but as soon as you hit the red key it restores the Orange rubbish again....aarrgh.
I rang Orange and complained about it and they were pretty unhelpful and gave me Nokia's number and said that they couldn't do anything try them....great thanks.
It has got to be said that the home screen idea is an absolute diatribe. Possibly the worst implementation of a an even worse idea I've ever had the misfortune to encounter. Why it is that Orange think they are better at GUI design than Nokia is utterly beyond me. The fact that you cannot turn this home screen off is just the "kick when your down" you didn't want. Think of it this way: You buy a PC and you want to change the desktop font to white because you have an almost entirely black background but you can't because the fonts aren't changeable. Scenario 2: You have slight visual problems and you'd like to choose a larger font... you can't. See where I'm going?
I cannot complain more bitterly about it. They have succeeded in destroying the front end of a potentially fantastic phone by slapping their child designed icon's with the most boring "Arial" font all over the "desktop" of the phone. The phone is great but I refuse to live with this horrendous home screen, the sooner I can get rid of it the better.
