Modify SIM To Act As Different Service Provider

I know this is probably impossible, but i thought I would bring it up anyway.
What kind of information does the SIM contain that lets the phone know what service provider it is for...
In short, Instead of trying to unlock BB5 phones etc.... How possible would it be to modify a SIM, to "trick" the phone?

On the sim card the MCC+MNC is integral on the sim card also with other sims you may have to mess about with GID codes, also as the sim is networks property you risk being thrown off the network you also have an IMSI value to contend with!
