Thread: Memory cleaning

    Question Memory cleaning

Like many of you, I have dozens of apps and games waiting to make their way into my phone, but I have a few questions... Could someone just answer Yes or No to them?

    1) When I choose to delete some app/game, it deletes ALL the files it installed?

    2) If not, can I easily delete them with a file manager (I mean, are they all in a few known folders?)

    3) If I make a backup of the phone with PC Suite and later I restore it, will it leave the Phone EXACTLY as it was the first Day?

    4) I've seen the option to "restore factory settings" in some programs... Is this safe? I mean, I don't have the cables nor the soft to flash the phone again if something goes wrong.

    Thanks in Advance

    1. No, some program keep it's config/settings file intact so if you re-install the program it will use the same setting

    2. Yes, if you're sure that the file is not used by other program you can delete it.

    3. No. To do that you have to format the phone by typing :*#7370# remember to do this with the phone in charge and DO NOT TOUCH it until it has finish.
it will take long if u have lots of files to delete

    4. Yes, it's save but it doesn't make your phone to the way you buy it. it will only change it settings to the default value. to make your phone like brand new (no extra apps installed) you have to format your phone !!

Yeah, like I supossed it's like a PC, but the option of "reformatting" the phone is not as easy as in a PC. I tried the *#7370# trick and it redered the phone in a completly unusable state. Even in a Nokia Center, opening the phone and using the cable, could'nt reistall the operating system.

The phone is currently on Nokia Tecnical Service, where they're trying to reload the software. That's why I'm not very prone to use methods to "reset" the phone if I don't have a way to reload everything later (without having to spend $130 on hardware)

Specially after my problem with the latest version of Psilock programs.... hope there is another way coz reinstalling or restoring everything takes so much time.... thanks

OK...I have some experience with this that I might help with but I also need help myself.

1,2. It does not delete all the files. I find that if you uninstall something and it doesn't delete all the files, you can usually go scroll around with a file manager and delete some of the junk off, the files are sometimes named in ways that you would recognize but I have yet found a specific place these files are in, it seems pretty random sometimes One thing is to make sure you go to your c:\system\mail\ and your memory card under same folder and delete some of the attachment that doesn't show up in your mail but is still lurking around in one of those folders. If you can't account for some space this is probably where to look. I found 4 or 5 attachments that was in one of those folders that doesn't appear in my messaging box. I use FExplorer. I wish someone with more knowlege would post something about what is ok to clean off and what is not. That would be really useful.

    3. I think it does, if you back it up and did something with it, it will restore it to when you backed it up. Make sure you back up your contacts and stuff because that sometimes don't get backed up if it's in use during the back up. I lost some contacts like that, but I resyncrhonised it with my outlook and got it all back.

    4. Now this one is the one you should never do. I don't know who the heck posted this, I thought when they say it gets your phone to factory setting it means you have what you had when you bought the phone. It does not, it removes everything but the phone app. You can't do anything at all. Luckily I had 2 MMC cards and one of them still had some of the apps on there. I was able to use the backup program to restore what I had lost during the reset. Sure your phone will eventually slows down as more and more apps are installed and removed. I try to keep it clean atleast the C drive.

Of all the apps and games out there...how come there's no app to clean your phone of unwanted files. There's definitely a need for some file/space/performace tuning program.
