Lithium batteries in old phones?

If you put a li-ion battery in... let's say a 3310, will it then charge it properly? (You charge li-ion batteries in a different way than ni-mh batteries)
I've noticed that if you put li-ion batteries in *some* 3310's the phone will kill the battery very quickly, others work fine with them, I cannot see why they should kill the batteries unless it's hardware related, as they've all had the same software version, is there something I've missed here?

I would say it should work.

Cause the 3310 have the charge-circuit inside the battery. (or am i wrong?)
(maybe its the newer ones that has)

in 3310 firmware there are some service routines that detect which type of battery is being used and therefore the phone adjusts the behaviour to the battery inserted

i'm speaking of firmware like 6.33 so i don't know how they used to work before but i guess after 5.47 or so they all have that hability
