Just another crazy idea form cypher....

I was in the supermarket this morning and I thought 'cell phones can transmit quite a distance... (however far it is to the repeaters), so why don't we modify some phone software (we'd probably need someone like NokDoc for this) and have some way of transmitting between phones that are only a short distance apart? What I mean is, why don't we program a phone to be able to communicate with another phone without the repeaters? There would be a range limitation, but you could have free calls and SMS!!!

I know it would be a lot of work... and maybe phones don't have enough spare memory to program something like this in... But I thought I'd throw it out into the NFree world anyway...

What do you think? Could it be done??

hi mate, yeah its a great idea-i thought of it when i first got a gsm a few years ago; how good would it be to just prank people close by for free?!? to watch their face? lolz
unfortunately the mobile companies beat us to recognising this-its called bluetooth

    I agree with Vyrus Débar.

Better buy 2 walkie talkies, they are cheaper, and nobody have to reprogram the nokia. btw. If you connect a walkie talkie that can handle data, like packet radio, connect it to your PC, palm or notebook, and you can even transfer a DivX movie to an other packet radio.

btw. The Network company has a lot of Servers and Gateways for the phones. No Nokia can handle this huge data. e.g. If I send a SMS or a phone call to somebody, how will the phone know to what mobile it's sending the SMS? What protocol will be used for the connection? What will be the Server for data exchange?

It might be possible, but it's not realisable at this time. And it'd be a a lot of hard work.

    Better:
    1) Purchaseing 2 walkie talkies
    2) Wait till the Nokia-Guys at Nokia Corp. do it in their "futre phones".

The Idea is really great! But the possibility is not given at this time to realise that project.

Ok.. I'll just go off to the corner and cry....

Hehe. After I learn c++ I want to give asm a go.. then again... that's some pretty hardcore stuff.....

Ahh well, thanks for the responses.

P.s. While I'm here, I was wondering if we could play with all the free space that I can see down at the 'bottom' of my flash file. I opened it with WinARM, and there's all these free lines down at the bottom of the phone. Does this mean I could program new functions in?>

    Dammit.. I need bluetooth...

bluetooth already allows transfer of short messages between two mobile devices that are bluetooth enabled and within range of each other..
it can also transfer data/packets between phone and other bluetooth enabled devices..

So maybe someone could patch the bluetooth code into the empty space in a 3310 flash file? Or would it be too large?

Its not just the code you would need the transmitter and recevier (thats hardware) to use BlueTooth

Ohh. Damn. I was under the impression it just used the standard radio transmitting HW... Damn... I guess that means when I learn asm that i'm going to have to program my own version... I think i'll call it 'RedTooth' hehe.

    Thanks for the info!

Sure, you can use the free space at the bottom and prog new functions in it. Well, at this time, it even sounds not very hard anymore to "Copy 'n Paste" the functions from other phones. But then theres still a problem. The ASM programers at this forum will C that the MCU programming of 8250 and 8210 is different!
Because of the ROM version. And all the functions of the 3310 cannot be copied to the 8210, some are, some are not.

But you should really begin with ASM programing! (Even some of the tech-guys of the NSA and CIA know it).

Hmm, about the possibilities of walkie talkie on GSM phone...
If the phone would send and receive at the bandwith at 900 or 1800/1900 MHz in "RAW-Modus", like the walkie talkies do, it might be possible to use it as a walkie talkie. But because the terms and conditions of the local cellular provider would be broken and interferences can disturb the phoning of others, I think it's illegal, for sure in Germany it is. But the possibility is given. Hope, this can be an little idea.

Lol, that's just because sanity is overrated!

@enzo, can you reccomend any sites I go to to learn asm?
