My first Nokia is one I don't think I've seen in this thread yet. 6185. Sprint version of the 6190, before Sprint temporarily banned Nokias from being activated on their network for compatibility issues (Obviously they've since started allowing them again)

I've used FAR too many Nokias to list, but my current one is the N70. I also have a 9300 on the way. If it's existed in the US, I've probably owned it, if only for a brief period of time.

Thumbs up My first mobile phone...

Nokia 5165 "the blue brick" provided by my job, stuck me with the monthly bill.

Got tired of the 99 max phone book entries with only one number per entry.
Bought a Cingular branded 6340i GAIT phone off Ebay for $40 in the spring of 2003, brought the gold brick and the blue brick to my local Cingular store, they gladly moved my service to the gold brick free of charge, deactivated the blue brick, handed them both back to me and that was that.

The 6340i "gold brick" after some 1,400 total talk hours of service is now somewhat flaky, the TDMA network here blows chunks since Katrina hit us last year, and I never knew if the total lack of any signal was true or the gold brick having a brain fart again... I LOVED GAIT but I hated being locked to a 3 year old 850 Nation plan (no rollover, no mobile to mobile, no text messaging, no extended nights/weekends, etc) that Cingular wouldn't allow me to make any changes to whatsoever anymore and wouldn't let me buy a used low hours 6340i and move my GAIT service to it since they will NOT activate any TDMA numbers anymore so I bought a 6590i to give "GSM Only" a trial run in the 200 mile area where I live and work regularly. It worked well enough so I finally changed to a new plan with all sorts of included stuff like rollover and more anytime minutes and said goodbye to GAIT forever.
A multimedia type data plan is on my wishlist next...

After about 2 months of the 6590i I inherited a 6230b (about 3 weeks ago), stuck my 32K 1st gen sim card in it and all was well with color screen, MP3 Player, camera phone and all, woo hoo!

    Until...
The old sim had seen better days. The contact pads on it were so worn it that any phone I put it in would randomly say "insert sim card" which wouldn't have bothered me much except that the phone, if on screen saver clock, wouldn't bother to notify me of the problem and I would miss all calls until I happened to press any button and see the insert sim card message show up.

So... I took the 6230b to my local Cingular main store, told them about the "problem", they saw the 32K card and were more than happy to replace it with a new sim with no mention of any charge for doing it at all. That's where it all went bad... "Phone restricted" appeared on the 6230b screen with any card they put in it other than my old 32K sim which was now removed from service and could not be reactivated. They removed the blue G3 sim, saying that my phone was "too old" for it, stuck an orange 64K G3 sim in it instead and got the same message. They tried removing the battery until the phone was completely dead, tried more 64k cards, called "tech support" and finally handed me back the restricted 6230b with the 64K G3 card still in it and my 32K deactivated sim with my phone book on it, and said "sorry, you need a new phone". The phone had a Cingular logo on the back cover and all over the menus in the phone and neither I nor it were still under contract anymore, but would they even try to remove their lock? Nooooo. Instead they wanted me to sign a new contract and BUY a new phone!

Not knowing if it was just a lock problem for sure, since after all it WAS a Cingular Nokia phone and was working fine with any 32K Cingular sim, I walked out of the store with my 6230b and no way to use it.

I had unlocked my 6590i with the Crux calculator when I got it this year, same thing for the old "gold brick" 6340i back in 2003 so for the fun of it I put that "too new for my 6230b" 64K G3 sim in the older 6590i and Voila, no restriction! Moments later I even received a "welcome to Cingular" text message and a minute later my boss called, yay working phone service...
It also worked, totally unrestricted in the 6340i when the 6340i felt like giving me any signal too. So much for their "your 6230b is too old" theory.

Tonight, after burning 3 tries to unlock it over the weekend, I succeeded in unlocking the 6230b on try #4 and the 6590i is once again the simless spare backup phone sitting on the night stand doing nothing.

    That's 2 years on a 5165, three+ years on a 6340i GAIT phone I loved, less than 3 months on a 6590i GSM phone, and maybe 3 weeks so far on a 6230b.
I'm staring at the E61 now that my GAIT is gone for good...

The 5165 was "the free phone" back in 2001. It worked.
I paid $40 for the used (only 7 hours on it) Cingular 6340i in 2003, LOVED it!
I paid $40 for the used (68 hours on it) Cingular 6590i this summer. Too plain.
I paid nothing for the 6230b because I did a favor for the previous owner...

Not a bad investment, especially for some decent Nokias.

6 years, 4 Nokias, nothing else even considered... 'nuff said?
