I can't help with the description of other zones but I will add some info about them that I gathered while reversing the firmware.

Besides zones there are (so called) windows. Windows use zones as their dimensions descriptors. Hence, a single zone can be used by multiple windows and changing them can affect many firmware functions.

The zones that have two forms, longer and shorter, like for example battery/network bars zones are used alternatively (one at a time) depending on currently selected language. In case of bars, the shorter are being used if "chineese" language is selected. This is beacause the Navi key description uses a taller font and the bars have to be shorter. Simmilar mechanisms are used in other places too, for example in windows tags (see dump_windows_tags.nrx script for NokiX).
