8210 upgrade on stock hardware

How far can an 8210 be upgraded, i know you can go to 8250, but ive heard of people going to 8850, 8855 or 8890, does this require hardware mods?

AS FAR AS I KNOW THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOES VERSIONS ARE THE PHYSICAL APPEARANCE, BUT FIRMWARE SOFTWARE IS THE SAME.
