There is still no information about any such phone on any nokia site. Where do you learned about this phone? The 'i' is usually used by nokia for inhanced wap functions or for color screen functions and I don't think that 7250 is short of any of these...
Nokia 7250i (http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/7250i)
I seriously doubt the 'i' in 7250i offers that much enhancements. It hasnt been launched yet but the features dont differ that much from the original 7250.
You can assign a picture to your contacts;
You can add in clipart and text onto your images now;
You can personalise your to-go menu to access your more frequently used menu options;
Any maybe something else I'm missing ... never used a 7250.
thats it! they could have added most of these features in a flash rom upgrade ... but I guess Nokia has lost it's innovative touch if it thinks that by adding these features they should create a "new" phone...
just my 2 cents ...

Kinda like SE T68 and SE T68i, just flash the T68 and you got yourself a T68i.

i think its just an american answer to the 7250, as you'll notice that there is no 7250 on the nokiausa site, and no 7250i on other nokia sites. I imagine all the enhancements on the 7250i will be in the next 7250 firmware release (the reason the 7250i is yet to be released is probably because the firmware isnt ready :P)
just my thoughts anyway

I know the 7250 is already tri band but nokia probably made a modded handset for the american networks, a bit like the nokia 8310 and 8390. the only diff's were that the 8390 has no radio, and is 1900 MHz only. you couldnt really call it a 7290 cos that'd just be a 7210 for the american market, assuming the '50' means camera, that's probably why they opted for the 'i' instead.

It is SO much better than my 7250. Can we flash our own or is the hardware a bit different?

Are there any hardware differences too between 7250 and 7250i?

no hardware different

Erm are we sure there are no hardware differences? I mean, the 7250i offers a camera which can zoom in - surely the camera in our current 7250's is not capable of zooming?
Is there any more information on this topic anyway? I.e. do we know for certain yet whether its possible or have we come to the conclusion it can't be done?
I'd love the extra phonebook feature, add a picture to your contacts - but the rest I'm not fussed about!

Hi Peoples :)
I haven't had a 7250i but i know for sure, zooming is only a software thing. I have a digital cam (Sony Cybershot, the old model) which also got a 3x digital zoom. The lens is static, doesn't move. It is digitally zoomed, same as when you view a jpg or whatever image on the computer and zoom it in or out. Same as then, the more you zoom, the more it get's blur :)
I am just curious about the other thing... the 7250i has more memory?? I have read in a preview-website that the 7250i offers 4.5 MB instead of the 7250's 3.5. But my boyfriend's 7250 has 5.0 MB out of the box?? In fact, as far as i know, all 7250's have 5 MB... or am i wrong??
Cheers....

Hmm, that's interesting to read that the zoom is software based - I just presumed it would be hardware.
Yeah I don't get it, that whole memory issue is weird. My 7250 reports 5mb of shared memory

I have contact Nokia who have advised that there is no firmware upgrade for upgrading from 7250 to 7250i!!
Also, it should be available by end of June.

Ah yes, but think about it. Nokia aren't going to say 'yes, rather then pay for our new phone, we'll simply give you an upgrade'!
Its still not clear once someone gets hold of the 7250i firmware, whether it can be flashed to the 7250.

i will explain the memory.....
our 7250's have 5.5 megs of ram.....roughly...
725k(might be just 0.5k) has been allocated to phonebook and normal stuff,
so that leaves like 4.9 or whatever....it comes up wif at the start...
i know its abit off,but its roughly there
the 7250i has the same 5.5 megs of ram....
though 0.5k more has been allocated to phonebook and normal stuff like msg, mms inbox and stuff like that...
so that leaves 4.5 megs of ram for normal usage.
that is what im assuming ..... same hardware and no change of memory at all ,which is what i reckon is going on right now with these 2 fones.
this was done to make it look like theres less ram in the actual hardware which is clearly NOT TRUE!

FYI
- From a Nokia webpage
*************************************************
7250i FAQ
Why are Nokia bringing in a modified model so soon after the launch of the Nokia 7250 ?
The 7250/i model will have a long life span and to sustain this a few improvements needed to be made, particulaly with the browser. The xHTML browser will allow the model to be competitive for its life cycle.
What's the difference between Nokia 7250 and the new 7250i?
7250i has the following features added:
xHTML browser (using WAP stack)
Caller Identification (CLI) with Images (i.e. add a photo/image to people in your phonebook - when they call you... their photo will appear on screen !)
Night Mode in Camera Function (artificially adds background lighting when you take pictures in dark environments)
Image 'Handling' Improvements (zoom previously taken photos, edit pictures with photo frames / add text / add clip art, edit picture contrast etc)
User selectable 'Grid' Menu display
Will the Nokia 7250 phone owners be able to upgrade the software of their phones to the Nokia 7250i version?
Unfortunately, this is not possible.
Why not?
Unfortunately, our service and support infrastructure is not structured in a way that can support this type of software upgrade. As a result, consumers who are interested in the new features of the Nokia 7250i will need to visit their nearest retailer to purchase the phone.
Will the mechanics change?
The mechanics and colour options will remain the same as the 7250 ( silver or plum ) however the product codes will change and new order numbers will be provided closer to launch date.
***********************************************
Judging by their response regarding a software upgrade it looks as though they arent going to offer an upgrade due to Nokia wanting more sales and not that its impossible to do due to hardware differences etc.
This is my first post.
Hope this helps

WOULD u tell ur customers that, its possible to upgrade however WE WILL not upgrade THEM..............no
i would probably believe they've made the slightest minor change like, made the RAM at another address instead of the old 7250 address therefore the new rom will not work in the old hardware.... slight changes like that.....is what they make money from!
yjagota

Ya! Nokia sure knows how to make money. When will these people realize the money's worth for people who can't afford to sell their phone on half the prize they brought it on and then again pay full prize for a newer version of the same phone.
When will Nokia really learn that sometimes customer satisfaction is more important than profitable business.

So is that settled then? Even if we had the software we couldnt flash our 7250s to a 7250i?
Thanh

Hello :)
If someone gives me the software, i am ready to test it..... My boyfriend got a 7250 and loves the features of the "i" version... we are not shy to do an experiment, only need the software. The worst can happen is that it doesn't work... still can re-flash to a normal 7250 and nothing is lost.
Someone got a 7250i flash file? Please post here... i will post results :)
Cheers...

Mr. Thanh..i am not so sure about reflashing to 7250...
remeber 6310 and 6310 i.....

Hmmm...
I don't know about 6310 and 6310i... never had one of those :) But that's why i said... worst is, it won't work... then can reflash anyway :)
About the 7250i, it seems to be available in the US since a while already, and, according to Nokia's website, it is planned to launch in asia and europe in "3th quarter 2003". I can't wait for them to be widely available! Maybe that one could replace my 6610 then :) And also flash files will then, hopefully, be available for my little "test"... i think if i can get hold of such a file, i can convince one of the guys at MBK to flash it for me free and keep a copy of the file :)
I still have not ANY means to connect the phone with my PC :....(
Cheers....

True, and same goes for the 3310 and 3330, 3510 and 3510i.
But then the 3310 -> 3315 or 3330 -> 3350 8210 -> 8250 6210 -> 6250)
I like to see it as a surprise.
Lets just wait and see.;)

however all of these things are simply software mods, I recon (and hope) that all of the changes are software and not hardware based. The changes seem to be based around software I must admit, but we all know NOKIA, this is a classical story (3310-3330 etc) and could turn out to be minor hardware mod.
However, if this is the case then who knows? we allways know people who can do smt work.

The flash memory area is not same. Maybe I am using the wrong words. I'm not into the hardware stuff, but I read it somewhere...I don't remember exactly from where I read it otherwise I could have given a better idea.
ZeroCoder

Why it's impossible?
1- Nokia is using a different Hardware ID for 7250i. NHL-4J"X"
This can mean that: Ram size may be different:
7250i offers 500K more memory. 7250 has 5 MB base shared and 7250i has 5.5MB of it. Approz 1.5 MB is used for flash. So you have 3.5 for 7250, 4.0 for 7250i... Also, Including picture caller ID's to phone memory needs an extra software structure. You have a new field...
2- The IMEI is Write once on 72xx Series...
Nokia may be generating IMEI's with a special algorithm that may include model number, or hardware model. So they can control the hardware - software compability by this IMEI. if IMEI funciton is wrong, you simply cannot boot the phone... This is an nearly unbreakable protection for firmware. Also you can include some other signature on this "write once" chip. Firmware can also control that. Like a watchdog... Or stg like that...

look at the 7250 user manual, you will see that the 7250 has indeed 5.5 MB, not 5 as you suggest zerocoder.

Hi there :)
My boyfriend got a 7250, and when it was brand new, it reported "5.0 MB free"....... but there is also a chunk of memory "reserved" for phone book and calendar entries, are that the additional 500 kb? Maybe this is what confuses people........
Just an idea....

who knows, my 7250 never reports the actual amount of memory used. in the menu it says about 100k in games and 557k in app's. but the total free memory is 2991kb, so some is missing somwhere. its obviously not accounting for the space used by pictures or tones.
